In women with luteal insufficiency, progesterone secretion is mostly insufficient. Progesterone mainly acts on the endometrium, causing secretory changes in the uterus, which is very necessary for the implantation of the fertilized egg and the maintenance of pregnancy. If progesterone is not secreted sufficiently, the secretory changes of the endometrium will be adversely affected.

What is the female luteal phase? Even if the fertilized egg implants, miscarriage may occur due to insufficient progesterone secretion. According to statistics, 3-4% of infertile women are caused by luteal insufficiency.

The ovulatory follicle forms a corpus luteum and secretes a large amount of progesterone and estrogen. Progesterone reaches its peak on the 22nd to 23rd day. At this time, it is most reliable to measure the progesterone level and evaluate the corpus luteum function. The endometrium continues to thicken and reaches 15-19mm before menstruation.

At the end of the luteal phase of a woman's life, the growth of the endometrium reaches its peak, preparing the conditions for the implantation and continued development of the fertilized egg.

The gynecologist explained that under normal circumstances, after ovulation, the follicle will luteinize, form a corpus luteum and secrete estrogen and progesterone to stimulate the growth of the endometrium. However, if neuroendocrine regulation dysfunction or other reasons lead to insufficient progesterone secretion during the luteal phase or premature luteal recession, it will lead to endometrial hypoplasia and shortened luteal phase, causing female infertility.
