What is the thickness of the endometrium on ultrasound?

I don’t know if everyone knows where the uterus of female stars is, but the uterus is below the belly button. Women who have given birth know that after giving birth, the blood congestion in the uterus needs to be squeezed out, and at that time, the squeeze is done by pressing the belly button. Women who don’t know must know that when a pregnant woman becomes pregnant, her belly starts to swell from the belly button, because the uterus that nurtures the baby is just below the belly button. Many women may worry whether endometrial thickening will cause infertility or difficulty in getting pregnant. Here we will introduce to you what is the thickness of the endometrium?

The endometrium will change, and different periods have different standards. Taking a 28-day menstrual cycle as an example, the cyclical changes of the endometrium can be divided into three phases:

1. Proliferative phase: The 5th to 14th day of the menstrual cycle, which is equivalent to the stage of follicle development and maturation. Under the action of estrogen during the follicular phase, endometrial glands and interstitial cells proliferate.

The proliferative stage is divided into three stages: early, middle and late.

1) Early proliferative phase: Day 5-7 of the menstrual cycle. The proliferation and repair of the endometrium begins during the menstrual period. During this period, the endometrium is relatively thin, only 1 to 2 mm.

2) Mid-proliferative phase: 8th to 10th day of the menstrual cycle. This stage is characterized by obvious interstitial edema; the number of glands increases, they grow, and they become curved; the glandular epithelial cells proliferate actively, the cells are columnar, and they show signs of division.

3) Late proliferative phase: 11th to 14th day of the menstrual cycle. During this period, the endometrium thickens to 3-5mm, and the surface is uneven and slightly wavy.

2. Secretory phase: After the corpus luteum is formed, the endometrium shows a secretory reaction under the action of progesterone. The secretory phase is also divided into three stages: early, middle and late.

1) Early secretory phase: Day 15-19 of the menstrual cycle.

2) Mid-secretory phase: Day 20-23 of the menstrual cycle. The inner membrane is thicker and more serrated than before.

3) Late secretory phase: Day 24 to 28 of the menstrual cycle. This period is the pre-menstrual period. The endometrium is thickened and spongy, with a thickness of about 5 to 6 mm.

3. Menstrual period: Day 1 to 4 of the menstrual cycle. At this time, the levels of estrogen and progesterone decrease, activating the synthesis of prostaglandins in the endometrium. Prostaglandins can stimulate the contraction of the uterine muscle layer and cause continuous spasm of the spiral arterioles in the functional layer of the endometrium, resulting in a decrease in endometrial blood flow. The degenerated and necrotic endometrium is mixed with blood and discharged to form menstrual blood. The thickness of the endometrium can reach 8-10mm.

After reading the above introduction, you should have a better understanding of the thickness of the endometrium. You should know that the endometrium is not always the same, but will change randomly with menstruation. If a woman feels that the thickness of the endometrium will affect her fertility, she can first undergo an ultrasound examination, the most important thing being to exclude the symptoms of endometrial polyps. Many women experience severe pain in the first two days of menstruation, which indicates that the endometrium is thickened and not easy to implant. Therefore, women who experience menstrual pain need to take good care of their bodies.
