How many kidneys does a woman have?

Every organ in the body plays a vital role. The kidney is a relatively important organ in our body and an important excretory organ. However, we all know that men generally have two kidneys. Many women believe that due to the different body structures of men and women, they often do not know how many kidneys they have. Let’s find out how many kidneys women have.

How many kidneys does a woman have?

Men and women are the same, both have one spleen and two kidneys

The kidneys are paired, lenticular organs located in shallow recesses on either side of the spine behind the peritoneum. It is about 10-12 cm long, 5-6 cm wide, 3-4 cm thick, and weighs 120-150 grams. The left kidney is slightly larger than the right kidney. The upper end of the kidney's longitudinal axis is inward and the lower end is outward. Therefore, the upper poles of the two kidneys are closer and the lower poles are farther apart. The angle between the kidney's longitudinal axis and the spine is about 30 degrees. There is a depression on one side of the kidney, called the renal hilum, which is where the renal vein and renal artery enter and exit the kidney and where the ureter connects to the kidney.

Function of the kidneys

(1) Produce urine and maintain water balance: When blood flows through the nephron, the water in the plasma and the crystal substances dissolved in it are filtered into the various sections of the renal tubules under normal filtration pressure. The renal tubular epithelial cells secrete unconcentrated urine from the human body into the tubular lumen from time to time. When there is too much or too little water in the human body, the kidneys regulate the amount of urine to maintain the water balance in the body.

(2) Eliminate metabolic products and toxic substances from the human body: When the human body metabolizes, it produces some substances that are not needed or even harmful to the human body, such as urea, uric acid, creatinine and other oxygen-containing substances. The kidneys can excrete these wastes from the body, thereby maintaining normal physiological activities.

(3) Maintaining the body's acid-base balance: The kidneys can excrete acidic substances produced during metabolism through urine, while reabsorbing bicarbonate and controlling the ratio of acidic and alkaline substances excreted to maintain the acid-base balance.

(4) Secrete or synthesize some substances to regulate the physiological functions of the human body: such as secreting renin and prostaglandins related to regulating blood pressure; secreting erythropoietin, if reduced, can cause anemia; and also secreting 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, which is related to the brittleness and strength of bones.

If you want to have a healthy body, you should learn more about the common sense of the body. This will also facilitate timely treatment when you feel unwell.
