(1) Qi stagnation and blood stasis: abdominal distension and pain before or during menstruation, refusal to press, restlessness, scanty or irregular menstruation, dark purple menstrual blood with blood clots, pain relieved after the blood clots are discharged, irritability, chest and breast swelling, dark purple tongue or ecchymosis on the edges of the tongue, stringy or wiry pulse.

Treatment method: Regulate Qi and activate blood circulation, resolve blood stasis and relieve pain. Prescription: 0g each of Citrus aurantium, Corydalis yanhusuo, Linderae scutellariae, processed Cyperus rotundus, Angelica sinensis, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Carthami, Cortex Moutan, stir-fried Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 15g of Red Peony Root, 12g of Peach Kernel, and 6g of roasted Licorice Root.

Chinese patent medicine: Tiaojing Sister Pills.

2) Cold and blood stasis: cold pain or colic in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation, pain relieved by heat, refusal to press, scanty menstrual flow, dark purple color, blood clots, pain relieved under the clots, fear of cold and cold limbs, dark purple tongue or with ecchymosis, slippery white tongue coating, deep and tight pulse.

Treatment method: Warm the meridians and dispel cold, promote blood circulation and relieve pain.

Prescription: 10 grams each of fried fennel, dried ginger, cinnamon, Chuanxiong, raw Puhuang (package), Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, Corydalis yanhusuo, processed myrrh, and 15 grams each of angelica and red peony root.
