Is pleurisy contagious?

Pleurisy is a serious inflammation of the pleura, and there are many causes of pleurisy. Since there are many causes of pleurisy, it is not possible to generalize whether pleurisy is contagious. General pleurisy is not contagious, but when it is active tuberculous pleurisy, it is contagious to a certain extent. Because tuberculosis itself is contagious, it requires isolation and treatment. The following are some tests for pleurisy:

1. Blood routine test

The white blood cell count is normal or slightly increased in the early stage, rarely exceeding 12×109/L. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate increases.

2. Sputum bacteria examination

Sputum bacteria positive.

3. Pleural fluid examination

It is exudative, transparent, straw yellow, with a specific gravity greater than 1.018, a positive rivaroxaban test, and a protein quantification greater than 30 g/L.

4. Chest X-ray

There are large areas of increased density and darker shadows in the middle and lower lung fields, and when there is a small amount of effusion, only the costophrenic angle becomes blunt.

Pleurisy is not an incurable disease. It can be recovered through a period of treatment. Don't be too nervous about whether pleurisy is contagious. Generally, it is not contagious. When diagnosed with pleurisy through examination, you must go to a regular hospital for treatment in time and do not delay the disease.
