Recently, the General Surgery Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital of South China University successfully performed a minimally invasive surgery on an elderly patient with rectal prolapse. The patient recovered quickly in a short period of time and received unanimous praise from the patient and his family. Rectal prolapse, commonly known as "rectal prolapse", refers to a disease in which the anal canal, rectal mucosa, the entire rectum and part of the sigmoid colon shift downward and protrude out of the anus. This disease not only brings physical discomfort to patients, but also seriously affects their quality of life. The patient had been suffering from rectal prolapse for a long time. Accompanied by his family, he came to the Department of General Surgery of the Third Affiliated Hospital of University of South China for treatment. After receiving the patient, Ouyang Deliang, deputy chief physician and director of the Department of General Surgery , conducted a comprehensive preoperative evaluation of the patient. Considering the patient's older age and the severity of rectal prolapse, Ouyang Deliang decided to develop a personalized minimally invasive surgery plan for the patient. The plan aims to achieve the best treatment effect with minimal trauma while ensuring that the patient can recover quickly in a short period of time. During the operation, Ouyang Deliang's team used advanced surgical instruments and techniques to accurately remove the prolapsed rectal mucosa and part of the muscularis propria tissue, and effectively fixed the rectum. The entire operation went smoothly, the patient had minimal intraoperative bleeding, and recovered well after the operation. After a period of rehabilitation treatment, the patient was able to defecate freely and no rectal prolapse occurred again. A brief introduction to rectal prolapse Rectal prolapse is a disease in which the mucosal layer of the rectal wall or the entire intestinal wall shifts downward. Diagnostic criteria for rectal prolapse: Type 1: Incomplete rectal prolapse, that is, rectal mucosal prolapse. It is characterized by the rectal mucosal layer protruding out of the anus, and the protruding material is hemispherical, and a ring-shaped mucosal groove with the rectal cavity as the center can be seen on its surface. Type II: Complete rectal prolapse, that is, full-thickness rectal prolapse. The prolapsed rectum is cone-shaped, and the prolapsed part can be seen as concentric ring grooves of mucosa arranged with the rectal cavity as the center. Type II is divided into three degrees according to the degree of prolapse: Grade I is intussusception in the ampulla of the rectum, that is, hidden rectal prolapse. The defecography shows an umbrella-shaped shadow. Grade II is full-thickness rectal prolapse outside the anus, the anal canal is in a normal position, the anal sphincter function is normal, and there is no anal incontinence. Grade III is the rectum and part of the sigmoid colon and anal canal prolapse outside the anus, the anal sphincter function is impaired, and there is incomplete or complete anal incontinence.
