In daily life, if children show signs of being afraid of light or rubbing their eyes, parents may mistakenly believe that their children’s eyesight has deteriorated and they cannot see clearly.

In fact, this may be due to inverted eyelashes or entropion of the eyelids:

Under normal circumstances, eyelashes grow outward from the eyes to protect the eyes. As the name suggests, inverted eyelashes grow in the opposite direction to the normal eye and grow inward.

Entropion refers to the inward deformation and abnormal position of the eyelid margin caused by various reasons. When it reaches a certain degree, the eyelashes and even the skin outside the face will fall towards the eyeball, irritating the cornea and damaging the ocular surface.

Trichiasis and entropion often coexist, causing the eyelashes to rub against the surface of the eyeball. In mild cases, there will be irritation symptoms such as foreign body sensation, tearing, pain, and fear of light. In severe cases, it can cause corneal inflammation, corneal ulcer scars, corneal neovascularization, etc., and eventually lead to corneal leukoplakia, seriously affecting vision and even blindness.

What should I do if I have inverted eyelashes or entropion?

At present, according to the severity of trichiasis, there are roughly three methods:

1. Conservative observation: Temporary inverted face caused by facial obesity, underdeveloped nose bridge or a few abnormal eyelashes are very soft and inverted eyelashes do not cause serious irritation or damage to the cornea.

2. Eyelash extraction or radio frequency treatment of inverted eyelashes: Several or a small number of eyelashes rub against the cornea backwards, causing irritation symptoms such as foreign body sensation, red and painful eyes, and tearing.

3. Surgical correction: It is often suitable for numerous or dense and stubborn inverted eyelashes, entropion with inverted eyelashes, and corneal inflammation caused by inverted eyelashes.
