"The final exams are coming up soon, why is my child's eyesight getting worse and worse?"

Recently, many parents have brought their children to check their eyesight. Due to the dry weather in winter, many children have dry eye problems and their myopia has worsened.

Is there any relationship between dry eyes and myopia? Do they affect each other?

The answer is: It has an impact!!!

How does dry eye affect vision in children?

First, it causes blurred vision. Dry eyes can cause the tear film to be unstable, tear secretion to be insufficient or the quality to decline, and the tear film cannot properly lubricate and protect the surface of the eyeball. This can cause the optical quality of the eye surface to decline, resulting in blurred vision.

Children may feel unclear when looking at things, which affects their learning and daily life. Especially after using their eyes for a long time, the symptoms of dry eyes may worsen and the blurred vision will become more obvious.

Second, it causes visual fatigue. Dry eyes can easily cause eye fatigue, and children may experience dry eyes, soreness, pain and other discomfort. In order to relieve these discomforts, children may blink and rub their eyes frequently , which further aggravates the fatigue of the eyes.

Visual fatigue will affect children's attention and learning efficiency. Long-term visual fatigue may also cause symptoms such as headaches and dizziness .

Will playing with mobile phones/watching electronic products aggravate dry eyes?

Children who always play with mobile phones, watch electronic products, etc. are more likely to suffer from dry eyes. Because when children focus on mobile phones and electronic products, the number of blinks will unconsciously decrease.

Normally, people blink about 15 to 20 times per minute, but when looking at electronic screens, the number of blinks may drop to 5 to 7 times per minute. Blinking can evenly distribute tears on the surface of the eyeball, which plays a role in lubricating and protecting the eyes. Fewer blinks will accelerate the evaporation of tears, leading to dry eyes. Secondly, when looking at mobile phones and electronic products, children's eyes are usually very close to the screen, which is considered close-up use of the eyes .

Using the eyes at close range will keep the eye's adjustment function in a state of tension for a long time, which can easily cause visual fatigue. Visual fatigue will affect the secretion and distribution of tears, increasing the risk of dry eyes.

What should parents do?

Whether it is dry eyes or myopia, an unhealthy lifestyle is an important cause. So first of all, parents should pay attention to adjusting their children's lifestyle. - Maintain a comprehensive diet.

Reduce the time spent using electronic products.

Maintain correct reading and writing posture, control reading and writing time, do not use eyes at close range for more than half an hour, and correct refractive errors in time.

Pay attention to eye hygiene, avoid rubbing your eyes with your hands, and treat related eye inflammation problems in a timely manner.

Ensure sleep time and quality.

If you find that your child often blinks, rubs his eyes, has red or itchy eyes, is prone to visual fatigue, or has "bags" or "acnes" on his eyelids , this may be a sign of dry eyes in children! You need to take your child to the hospital for relevant dry eye examinations in time.

Aier Eye Hospital has established more than 100 pediatric dry eye clinics across the country. The pediatric dry eye clinics are jointly attended by experts in cornea and ocular surface and optometry , opening up the "green referral for difficult eye diseases + multidisciplinary expert joint consultation" channel, providing a one-stop dry eye diagnosis and treatment plan for children with dry eye, and protecting children's bright future.
