When traveling during the National Day holiday, take these "travel tips" for diabetics with you, eat well, have fun, and don't worry about blood sugar!

National Day, as one of the most important holidays of the year, is a good time for friends and family to get together and travel. However, for diabetics, how can they enjoy the holiday while also controlling their blood sugar and traveling without worries?

Experts from the Department of Endocrinology at Hunan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine give you some travel tips to help you enjoy your National Day holiday.

1. Prepare your medication

When traveling during the National Day holiday, diabetics should make sure to carry enough insulin and oral hypoglycemic drugs, and clearly label them for easy identification. At the same time, carry medication prescriptions with you in case of emergency.

2. Carry a blood glucose monitoring device

It is recommended to carry a blood glucose meter with you and monitor blood glucose regularly. Especially when you feel unwell, you should monitor your blood glucose in time to help identify blood glucose problems so that you can adjust your treatment plan in time.

3. Prevent hypoglycemia

Carry chocolate, low-calorie snacks or glucose tablets with you as an emergency measure in case of hypoglycemia. At the same time, the history of diabetes should be clearly marked on the medical emergency card so that timely assistance can be obtained in an emergency.

4. Diet management

1. Reasonable diet:

When dining out, diabetics should control their food intake, ensure that they consume an appropriate amount of staple food, and avoid blood sugar fluctuations caused by eating too much vegetables and skipping staple food. At the same time, try to avoid alcohol and sugary drinks, and choose boiled water or tea instead. If you must drink, you should strictly control your drinking, not more than 15 grams of alcohol for women and 25 grams for men, and be alert to hypoglycemia that may be induced by alcohol.

2. Pay attention to food hygiene:

When dining out, choose regular restaurants with good hygiene conditions. Avoid eating spoiled, undercooked or unfamiliar food in the wild to prevent food poisoning.

V. Travel safety and health monitoring

1. Pay attention to travel safety:

When traveling during the National Day holiday, diabetics should try to avoid going to places where there are crowds and poor ventilation, and prevent excessive crowding and tension, so as not to induce cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.

2. Arrange your itinerary reasonably:

Make travel plans based on your own physical tolerance and avoid long or rushed trips. Take regular breaks during your trip and get up and move around every 1 to 2 hours to reduce the risk of blood clots.

3. Prevent influenza:

The temperature changes greatly in autumn, so diabetics need to pay special attention to preventing influenza. You can prepare cold, allergy, diarrhea and other medicines in advance, and take them as soon as possible if symptoms appear.

4. Pay attention to the amount of exercise:

Diabetic patients should control their exercise according to their condition. Patients with type 1 diabetes should avoid excessive fatigue, while patients with type 2 diabetes, especially those who are overweight, can moderately increase their exercise to help control blood sugar and lose weight if their medication is not restricted.

5. Foot protection:

Choose soft and comfortable hiking shoes, clean foreign objects in the shoes in time to avoid foot injuries. Check the condition of your feet before going to bed every day. If there is any abnormality, you should deal with it in time or seek medical attention.

The National Day is a time for gathering and relaxation, but diabetics still need to remain vigilant and pay attention to medication and blood sugar monitoring, proper diet, travel safety and health monitoring, home and outing safety, etc. Through scientific self-management and necessary protective measures, diabetics can also spend a healthy and happy National Day holiday.
