The reason why melasma is called liver spots is because of liver problems?

Chloasma is mainly manifested by symmetrical brown spots and patches on the face. It has another common name in my country, called "liver spots". This common name may be related to traditional Chinese medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, skin spots are related to liver function. Liver dysfunction may lead to poor blood circulation, thus causing pigmentation.

However, modern medical research shows that there is no scientific evidence that the formation of melasma is directly related to liver function. Liver disease may affect skin health, but it mainly manifests as symptoms such as jaundice, not melasma. Therefore, it is unscientific to attribute melasma to poor liver function.

In fact, the causes of melasma are complex and are related to genetic factors, sun exposure (ultraviolet radiation), changes in hormone levels (such as pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives), certain medications, etc., but there is no definite correlation with liver function.

Even if chloasma occurs, we do not need to do a liver examination. Instead, we should focus on scientific prevention and treatment, such as strengthening sun protection, avoiding other suspected causes, and using modern medical methods such as topical or oral medications for treatment.
