Corneal lesions are vulnerable to a blow. A puppy's paw "broken" the cornea

A man's cornea was "broken" by a puppy's paw. He went to the doctor and found out that his cornea had been diseased for a long time and could not withstand even the slightest trauma. Fortunately, his eye condition recovered through surgery.

Mr. Wang, 57 years old, lives in Huanggang. A week ago, he was accidentally hit on the right eye by a dog's paw. His right eye immediately turned red and his vision was blurred. He was also afraid of light and had tears. After seeing a doctor locally, the doctor recommended that he be transferred to a higher-level hospital for treatment. Mr. Wang came to the Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University.

After examination by Wu Shangcao, deputy chief physician of ocular surface and cornea specialist, Mr. Wang suffered a ruptured right eyeball with iris prolapse and right marginal corneal degeneration. Because the cornea above the right cornea had degeneration and the thickness of the cornea had become thinner, the dog hit him and caused the cornea to rupture.

Wu Shangcao said that the cornea is a very important barrier structure of the eyeball. Marginal corneal degeneration is a disease that occurs at the periphery of the cornea and gradually thins the cornea. The disease often occurs at the periphery above the cornea. As the disease progresses, the cornea becomes thinner and thinner. In severe cases, only a film-like epithelium and a bulging elastic layer remain at the thinnest part. The thinned part of the cornea may rupture and perforate due to slight trauma or spontaneously.

On May 13, Wu Shangcao performed debridement and suturing of the ruptured eyeball on Mr. Wang. Currently, Mr. Wang is recovering well. Wu Shangcao said that marginal corneal degeneration is common in middle-aged and elderly people. Because the lesions are located in the peripheral part of the cornea, it is difficult to detect abnormalities such as red eyes in the early stage due to the cover of the eyelids. In the later stage, the cornea becomes severely thin and the range expands, causing astigmatism and decreased vision. Since the exact cause of this disease is still unclear, it cannot be directly prevented. The risk of disease can only be reduced by maintaining good eye cleanliness and hygiene.
