Follow the traces of Zhongjing, and use Chinese medicine to benefit the people. Henan, as an important birthplace of Chinese civilization, plays a pivotal role in the development of traditional Chinese medicine. It is home to many great doctors and the four major Chinese medicines are highly praised. So, do you know the origin of dumplings and traditional Chinese medicine? How many acupuncture points are there in the bronze man? ... There is a Henan Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum hidden in Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Walk into it and you will have the answer.

The “treasure of the museum” proves the origin of the Chinese character “豫”

The main exhibition area of Henan Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine is located in the library of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It consists of five parts: Medical History Museum, School History Museum, Chinese Medicine Museum, Zhongjing Museum, and Ancient Books Museum, with an exhibition area of about 1,800 square meters. When you enter the Medical History Museum, you will see a large relief on the wall, which shows Songshan Mountain, the Yellow River, the River Map and Luoshu, and Fuxi Bagua. It combines symbols with symbolic significance of Henan with elements of traditional Chinese medicine. This is the beginning of the Medical History Museum.

Looking for Chinese medicine in literature, in the Medical History Museum, there is an exhibition area called "Understanding and Diagnosis of Diseases in Literature", which includes the medicinal herbs in Henan Province recorded in the Book of Songs, the records of diseases and health care in oracle bone inscriptions, such as the oracle inscriptions of Fu Hao's childbirth and the records of bone diseases. It is described as follows: "The oracle bones unearthed from Yinxu record diseases of different parts of the body, including more than 50 kinds of diseases such as head diseases, eye diseases, and abdominal diseases. From these records, we can see that the Yin people were not only able to recognize different types of diseases such as dental caries, but also use natural plants and minerals for treatment."

In addition to letting visitors understand the origin and development of traditional Chinese medicine from literature, this museum also houses a bronze acupuncture man, which is black in color and has holes drilled at different acupuncture points on its body, such as the shoulder pain point, the Hegu point, the Zusanli point, etc. Below the holes are the corresponding acupuncture point names, with a total of 354 acupuncture points. It is said that the bronze acupuncture man was invented by Wang Weiyi, a medical officer in the Song Dynasty. Zhang Ziyi, a tour guide of the Dandelion Campus Cultural Volunteer Tour Group of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said that its original intention was to allow students majoring in acupuncture to correctly and standardizedly understand acupuncture points. In normal teaching practice, the bronze acupuncture man will be used to assess students' mastery of acupuncture techniques. During the assessment, a layer of yellow wax is first applied to the surface of the bronze man, and water is filled into the body. Students use needles to prick the acupuncture points. If the puncture is accurate, water will flow out of the hole, otherwise no water will flow out, and this is used to judge the acupuncture level.

"Legend has it that dumplings were originally called 'jiao'er'. Do you know why?" Zhang Ziyi is explaining the story of the medical saint Zhang Zhongjing to primary school students who are visiting the museum. "That year, it snowed heavily in the middle of winter, and many people got frostbitten ears. A famous doctor chopped up mutton, ginger and other foods and herbs that have the effect of dispelling cold, wrapped them in pasta, pinched them into the shape of ears, and boiled them into a pot of soup, which he gave to the patients. After taking it, the patients felt hot all over, their blood flowed smoothly, and their ears gradually became warm. The name of this medicine is 'Quhan Jiao'er Soup', and this famous doctor is the medical saint Zhang Zhongjing we all know." The Zhongjing Hall of the Henan Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine is equipped with statues of characters and the preface of "Treatise on Febrile Diseases and Miscellaneous Diseases". Through pictures, texts, real objects, sound, light and electricity and other multimedia, it shows the inheritance of Zhang Zhongjing's academic thought, his academic and extension, and the research achievements of later generations.

The reason for setting up the Zhongjing Pavilion is that the relevant person in charge said that the medical saint Zhang Zhongjing is the master of traditional Chinese medicine and the pride of Henan people. The Zhongjing academic thought represented by the medical saint Zhang Zhongjing and his academic thoughts has made great contributions to world medicine and people's health. The purpose of setting up this exhibition hall is to allow students to learn the heart of saving the world and saving lives that the predecessors uphold, to study professional skills in depth, and to better play their professional expertise.

The exhibition area of soaked specimens in the Chinese Medicine Museum

Going deep into the museum, you can see rows of transparent glass bottles neatly arranged in the display cabinets. Inside the bottles are specimens of different kinds of Chinese herbal medicine. The veins of the branches and leaves of some specimens are clearly visible, and the peony flowers are blooming like plates... In the Chinese Medicine Museum, the exhibition area of soaked specimens is full of green branches and leaves, and colorful flowers. Zhang Ziyi said that these specimens all used the school's unique soaked specimen protection technology, which was awarded a national patent in 2008. Its characteristic is that it protects the original shape and color of Chinese medicinal materials. The earliest soaked specimen in the exhibition area is Evodia rutaecarpa made in 1985.

Hawksbill turtle, deer antler, Cibotium barometz, Millettia reticulata... Various medicinal specimens, animal and mineral medicines are displayed in the Chinese Medicine Museum. The saber-toothed elephant molar fossil is stored here as the treasure of the museum. It is reported that it was unearthed in the Chengbei Road Family Quarters of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the 1960s. Experts have identified it as a tooth fossil of a saber-toothed elephant. It is not only a Chinese medicine that can calm the nerves, but also proves the origin of the word "Yu" in Henan.
