Canalys: Apple's shipments in China will reach 42.9 million units in 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 17%

Recently, a Japanese media published an article titled "The iPhone Myth is Shattered in China", pointing out that Apple's strategy in China is facing challenges.

Authoritative data shows that in China's smartphone shipments in 2024, Apple's market share decreased by 20% compared with the previous year, ranking third, in sharp contrast to Huawei. It itself has failed to launch innovative products, and the development of emerging markets has also fallen short of expectations.

Canalys data shows that Apple's shipments in China will drop 17% to 42.9 million units in 2024, while Huawei's shipments will increase 37% to 46 million units. Although Apple's overall revenue increased, its revenue in Greater China only increased by 14%, and its share dropped from 25% to 17%.

Apple CEO Cook visited China several times in 2024, and visited Beijing in late November to discuss generative AI services. Japanese media said that because China has not approved overseas companies to carry out generative AI business, Apple's own "Apple Intelligence" cannot provide services in China, and is exploring the use of AI from local companies such as ByteDance.

As the new year begins, Apple has rarely reduced the price of its latest iPhone 16 series on its official website, with the maximum reduction of 500 yuan. Japanese media analysis said that it is difficult for Apple to get rid of its dependence on the Chinese market. On the one hand, the development of emerging markets is hindered, and the high price of iPhone affects sales; on the other hand, Apple has not launched innovative products after the iPhone, and its watches and glasses terminals are not hot-selling. It has also withdrawn from the development of pure electric vehicles.

Currently, the main battlefield of global smartphone technology has shifted to China, and Chinese companies are pushing new technologies and trends one after another, with short product development cycles. A Harvard University professor believes that Cook needs to actively participate in the competition to avoid falling behind. "Smartphone companies other than Samsung Electronics of South Korea mainly conduct business in China. Cook believes that he must participate in the competition in the main battlefield where other companies are also betting everything on it, so as not to fall behind."
