According to the latest data from Canalys, global tablet shipments increased 18% year-on-year to 35.9 million units in the second quarter of 2024. With typical seasonal consumption in the education market, Chromebook shipments increased 4% to 6 million units. Canalys analyst Kieren Jessop said: "The tablet industry performed well in the first half of 2024, and after a difficult 2023, the rest of the year should see further relief. New product launches coincide with the rise in cyclical refresh demand after tablet sales surged during the pandemic. Further innovations in areas such as display technology and integrated AI capabilities will attract more consumer interest, especially for high-end tablets. The Chinese tablet market has shown huge growth due to the aggressive promotional strategies of domestic suppliers, which has increased tablet penetration in the country. Shipments in regions such as the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe are also rising as these suppliers target international expansion. In India, government education tenders have driven demand, and growth is expected in the future as guidelines favor local device manufacturing." In the second quarter of 2024, Apple maintained its leading position in the global tablet market, with iPad shipments of 13.9 million units and a market share of 39%, thanks to strong sales of flagship models and growing demand in emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Samsung's shipments increased 13% year-on-year to 6.8 million units. Huawei maintained its third position with 2.5 million units shipped, an annual growth rate of 51%, mainly driven by demand in China and EMEA. Lenovo ranked fourth with 2.5 million units shipped, an annual growth of 16%, as the company strengthened its presence in most markets around the world. Xiaomi ranked fifth, surpassing Amazon, with a year-on-year growth of 106% and shipments of 2.1 million units. Global Chromebook shipments “Chromebook shipments saw a typical seasonal surge in the second quarter, growing 4% to more than 6 million units,” said Canalys analyst Greg Davis. “Chromebook shipments were boosted by region-specific education funding programs, such as the Emergency Connect Fund (ECF) in the United States, which requires spending to be completed by the second quarter of 2024. Discounts in the retail channel also helped support consumer demand for Chromebooks, especially with BYOD use in education environments. While we expect shipments to decline sequentially in the third quarter, the overall trend for Chromebooks remains positive due to its foothold in education and on-device AI capabilities.” In the Chromebook market, HP maintained its first position with 1.7 million units shipped in the second quarter of 2024, accounting for 28% of the market share. Lenovo ranked second with a year-on-year growth of 9%, with global shipments of 1.5 million units. Acer, which had the fastest growth this quarter, ranked third with 1.2 million units shipped thanks to its success in government tenders in the Asia-Pacific region. Dell and Asus ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, and both companies saw year-on-year declines in shipments. |
