IDC: Samsung sold 2.93 billion mobile phones in the past decade, 33% more than Apple

Samsung is an absolute juggernaut when it comes to the smartphone market. The latest market research shows that the South Korean company has sold 3 billion smartphones, a huge milestone that will be hard for other brands to surpass.

According to IDC, Samsung has outsold Apple by 33% over the past decade. This means Samsung has sold 2.93 billion phones, while Apple has sold 2.2 billion phones over the same period. IDC used shipment data from the first quarter of 2014 to the first quarter of 2024.

Not only has Samsung surpassed Apple by a wide margin, but it has also outsold Xiaomi, Vivo, and Huawei combined. While those companies are enjoying success, it’s safe to say that their performance isn’t on the same level as what the Galaxy maker has been able to achieve.

What’s even more interesting is that Samsung’s smartphone shipments have been declining every year for a while now, and this decline has been going on for some time. Despite this, Samsung still maintains its dominance in terms of sales.

The study also showed that 2015 was Samsung's best year yet, with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 released that year. The Galaxy S6 was a big deal for Samsung, as it was the company's first phone to offer the now-ubiquitous glass sandwich form factor. In 2015 alone, the company sold 320.9 million devices, while Apple sold 231.5 million phones.

Samsung's weakest year was 2022, when it sold 258.2 million phones, but it still ranked ahead of Apple, which sold 225.3 million smartphones.

Samsung's current posture suggests that the company is in a recovery phase. The Galaxy S24 series has been a huge success for the South Korean company, and the company has some very exciting products lined up for the second half of the year.
