CNBC: 26% of small businesses still use Facebook ads

Facebook's stock price has experienced wild swings over the past year, falling from nearly $220 last summer to a low of around $125 in early 2019 before recovering to nearly $190. But one thing has remained constant: the share of small businesses that buy Facebook ads.

According to a CNBC and SurveyMonkey survey of small businesses, 26% of small business owners have advertised on Facebook in the past few months. The last time small business owners were surveyed was in the second quarter of 2018, when 25% of small business owners said they had recently advertised on Facebook. 60% of business owners said they had not purchased ads on Facebook, compared to 62% of respondents a year ago.

For some businesses, Facebook remains a key global advertising platform.

Regulation and Privacy as an Advertising Issue

Facebook could face a fine of up to $5 billion to settle its charges with the FTC.

Privacy concerns and government scrutiny haven’t led small businesses to appreciate the potential value of Facebook advertising.

About half of small business owners said regulation of Facebook’s use of consumer data would not affect advertising, nearly the same as in a survey a year ago.

The relationship with Facebook is about to change

Facebook has 90 million small businesses on its platform worldwide. The U.S. Small Business Administration estimates the U.S. market accounts for 30 million. Facebook just launched a series of new tools aimed at providing advertising technology to small businesses that don’t have big budgets.
