Juniper Research predicts video traffic on smartphones will increase nearly eightfold between 2014 and 2019

Juniper Research predicts that by 2019, mobile data traffic generated by smartphones, tablets, etc. will be close to 197,000 gigabits, equivalent to the data volume of more than 10 billion Blu-ray movies.

However, research shows that by 2019, only 40% of the data generated will be transmitted on cellular networks, and the majority will be borne by Wi-Fi networks.

The average amount of data generated per month by smartphone and tablet users will double over the next four years, and mobile users’ daily media consumption will continue to increase, driven by 4G and high-definition video.

Researchers say video consumption is driving unprecedented amounts of network traffic. Juniper Research predicts that video traffic on smartphones will increase nearly eightfold between 2014 and 2019. Currently, video accounts for about 60% of global IP traffic. In some mature markets, this proportion is likely to exceed 70% in the next two to three years.

In addition, in 2014, data traffic from smartphones and tablets in the Far East and China exceeded that in North America for the first time.
