Pew Research Center: Survey shows Facebook user growth stagnated in the U.S.

The Pew Research Center released a new survey saying that Facebook remains the most popular social media site in the United States, although its growth has slowed and its user engagement has increased. Other platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn have seen significant growth in the number of users over the past year.

For industry leader Facebook, the survey results can be described as mixed. As expected, Facebook continues to dominate, with 71% of American adults using Facebook, but compared with 2013, Facebook's user base has basically remained flat, which means that the company will have a hard time gaining higher penetration.

On the other hand, Facebook's user engagement far exceeds that of other social media, with 70% of users saying they use Facebook every day, up 7% from 2013. 45% of users visit Facebook several times a day. In addition, 56% of American Internet users aged 65 and over use Facebook, up from 45% in 2013 and 35% in 2012.

The survey shows that while Facebook's U.S. user growth has stagnated, the user numbers of other mainstream social networks such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn have grown significantly. Facebook's Instagram has seen the largest increase in market share, from 17% in 2012 to 26%. Twitter's market share has risen from 18% in 2013 to 23%; Pinterest and LinkedIn's market shares are both 28%, up 7% and 6% respectively from 2013.

It is worth mentioning that the proportion of Internet users who use multiple social networks at the same time has increased significantly. 52% of people are using 2 or more social networks, which is much higher than 42% in 2013.

The survey also found some interesting data:

1) 36% of Twitter users visit the platform daily, a sharp drop of 10% from 2013. 22% of Twitter users log in to the platform several times a day, 24% log in several times a week, and 40% log in rarely.

2) 53% of young users (18 to 29 years old) are using Instagram, up from 37% in 2013. Instagram users are more active, with 49% logging in daily, 32% logging in several times a day, and 24% logging in several times a week.

3) Pinterest is still popular among women, with 42% of American female Internet users using the platform, up from 33% in 2013. The proportion of male users is 13%, up only 5% from 2013.

4) The percentage of users who visit LinkedIn weekly has dropped from 34% to 25%, while the number of users who visit LinkedIn every few weeks or longer has increased from 52% in 2013 to 61%.
