Instagram's monthly active users hit 100 million, up 10 million from the previous month

Despite some controversy surrounding its business last year, the growth of Facebook's photo app Instagram shows no signs of slowing down.

Instagram, the photo-sharing network service owned by social networking site Facebook, announced today that its monthly active users have reached 100 million.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram founder, said in a blog post that "Instagram is more popular than ever, with people in every corner of the world using it to capture images." Systrom even quoted a favorite catchphrase of his new boss, Mark Zuckerberg, saying, "The result we're seeing is a world that's more connected and understood through photos."

Instagram announced that its monthly active users reached 100 million, just one month after it last announced that its monthly active users reached 90 million. Previously, Instagram's standard for measuring the scale of its business was registered users, but the use of registered users lacked an accurate description and could not reflect how many people were actually using its application.

Instagram, which has been struggling to keep up with its growth, has added 10 million active users in just one month, despite a tightened privacy policy and an intensified content war with rival Twitter.

Instagram processes 40 million photos every day, receives 8,500 likes per second, and 1,000 comments per second.
