Nielsen: Pinterest user stay time increased 10 times in the past year

Early morning news on December 10, 2012, a report by Nielsen, a US market research organization, showed that from July 2011 to July 2012, Facebook was still the most visited social networking site in the United States, but the time American users spent on the photo social networking site Pinterest increased by more than 10 times year-on-year, and social media sites such as Google+, Tumblr, and Twitter were also becoming increasingly popular.

In 2016, Americans spent a total of 121 billion minutes on social networking sites, up from 88 billion minutes in the same period last year.

An interesting survey result is that online social networking makes users feel the beauty of life. According to a Nielsen report, 76% of users feel happy after visiting social media. Among the respondents aged 18 to 34, one-third of them visit social networking sites while going to the toilet.

The survey also found that the topics users discuss on social networking sites mainly revolve around daily trivialities, such as what TV shows to watch and what troubles they encounter at work.

Data on the "second screen" phenomenon (i.e., using a smartphone or tablet while watching TV) is on the rise. The report shows that 44% of tablet users and 38% of smartphone users in the United States use their mobile devices while watching TV. Nearly half of the respondents said they contacted merchant customer service through social media.

The survey also found that mobile Internet and mobile applications are driving the growth of online time for American users. On the other hand, although the time users spend on social networking sites has increased by 24%, the traffic to social networking sites through PCs has dropped by 5%.
