When we walk hard under the scorching sun in summer and sweat profusely, we may think: I will definitely lose a lot of weight this summer after sweating so much from being exposed to the sun. However, a new study gave us a blow: Sunlight exposure increases people's appetite and may lead to weight gain. What's more surprising is that this conclusion only works for men, while women are not affected. What controls appetite? Simply put, it is the communication between other areas of the body and the brain: hormones released by organs and tissues such as the intestines, adipose tissue, and liver reach specific brain areas (such as the hypothalamus) and control our need to eat based on the body's current energy situation. Light causes an increase in men's appetite-stimulating hormone levels, causing hunger. Five days after the men's skin samples were exposed to ultraviolet light, the levels of appetite-stimulating hormone began to increase, which further explains the observed changes in men's appetite in summer. Men should sunbathe in moderation! Otherwise you will gain weight. DOI: 10.1038/s42255-022-00587-9 DOI: 10.1038/s42255-022-00592-y |
