How did a non-biting mosquito "fly" into your eyes?

Summer is coming

The annoying mosquitoes have increased unknowingly.

But there is a kind of mosquito

You can't reach it, and you can't drive it away.

When reading a book, it is on the page

When working, it is on the screen

When the eyeball turns, the "mosquito" also turns

It seems that it only stops when I sleep.

In fact, this is the common eye floaters

So what exactly is floaters?

What consequences will it cause?

Does having floaters mean you are at risk of going blind?

Wu Jianhua, chief physician, associate professor, master's supervisor, deputy director of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Hubei Medical Association, deputy leader of the Fundus Disease Group of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Hubei Medical Association, director of the Fundus Disease Department, and dean of the Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), introduced that the vitreous body is a transparent colloid like egg white, filling four-fifths of the volume of the eyeball. It is usually colorless and transparent, contains 99% water and a small amount of protein, and light can pass through unobstructed.

When the vitreous body becomes cloudy, mosquito-like, fly-like, spider web-like or thread-like shadows will appear in front of the eyes. This is "vitreous opacity", which is the commonly known floaters.

1. No need to worry about physiological floaters

There are many reasons for the formation of floaters. Yan Jing, chief physician, deputy leader of the fundus disease group of Aier Eye Hospital Group in Hubei Province, and deputy director of the fundus disease department of Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), said that people who often stay up late and use their eyes for a long time or get eye fatigue will have red eyes after excessive use of their eyes, causing the entire eyeball to become congested. This congestion is usually non-infectious and can be relieved by taking a rest, but if the congestion penetrates into the vitreous body at this time, it can easily induce floaters.

Director Yan Jing emphasized that if you have symptoms of floaters, you should seek medical attention immediately and undergo B-ultrasound and other related examinations to determine whether it is physiological or pathological floaters. Physiological floaters will not affect your vision, and there is no risk of blindness, so there is no need to be nervous.

2. Pathological floaters may cause blindness

Director Yan Jing said that in clinical practice, 90% of floaters are physiological, that is, "good mosquitoes", and only 10% are pathological, that is, "bad mosquitoes".

If you feel any of the following: (1) floaters appear suddenly, with a lot of them, densely packed together. (2) floaters that used to appear suddenly increase in number. (3) accompanied by flashes of light. (4) appear after trauma. (5) vision loss. You must go to the hospital as soon as possible, as floaters that appear at this time are usually "bad flies".

Pathological floaters are mostly caused by moderate to high myopia, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc., which can induce internal bleeding or inflammation of the eyeball. Doctors emphasize that, in general, pathological floaters can be detected through a simple eye examination. If confirmed, they need to be treated by a doctor.
