A 34-year-old foreign man often suffers from visual fatigue due to high hyperopia

"I really don't want to wear glasses anymore. My eyes feel terribly uncomfortable after looking at the computer for a while every day," Khan from Pakistan told the doctor.

Khan, 34 years old, is currently studying and working in Wuhan. In recent years, he found that he could not see nearby objects clearly even with glasses, and often felt tired in the eyes. He felt very uncomfortable after sitting in front of the computer for a while. He thought it was caused by wearing glasses, but he heard that surgery could remove the glasses, so Khan came to the Affiliated Affiliated Aier Eye Hospital of Wuhan University on the recommendation of a friend.

He was examined by Dr. She Chunyan, a refractive specialist at the hospital. After examination, it was found that Khan had 500-degree hyperopia in his right eye and normal corrected vision, but 900-degree hyperopia in his left eye and only 0.2 corrected vision, which was amblyopia.

"Hyperopia is caused by a short eye axis. When no accommodation is used, parallel light rays are refracted through the eye and the main focus falls behind the retina, making it impossible to form a clear image on the retina. Generally, hyperopia of more than 500 degrees is considered high hyperopia." Dr. She Chunyan introduced that patients with hyperopia generally have difficulty seeing close objects clearly and often suffer from visual fatigue. As they age, the accommodative power of the ciliary muscles decreases, visual fatigue deepens, and symptoms such as blurred vision gradually appear. In addition, there will be heaviness of the eyeballs, deep eye pain, and even headaches of varying degrees.

Through examination, Khan's eye indicators meet the surgical indications. "Through the surgery, you can feel more comfortable when looking at close objects, but the amblyopia cannot be improved, which means that the corrected vision cannot reach normal levels." Dr. She Chunyan explained to Khan.

Zhang Qingsong, director of the refractive department of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, introduced that although hyperopia is not as common as myopia, it is also a type of refractive error. When the vision of hyperopic patients can be corrected to normal levels with glasses and the results of eye examinations permit, then surgery can be used to correct it.
