The pain is unbearable when my nails just show their sharp corners

I don’t need to describe the feeling of stubbing your toes on the door edge, right? The pain of paronychia is even more intense!

Paronychia, in layman's terms, means that when you cut your nails, you accidentally leave a sharp corner on the edge of the nail. As it grows, it will penetrate into the flesh on the edge of the toe and cause pain.

Generally, the affected area will have redness, swelling, pain, inflammatory exudation and granulation tissue hyperplasia. It often occurs in teenagers.

The development of paronychia can be divided into four stages, namely the redness and swelling stage, the inflammation stage, the granulation stage and the chronic ingrown paronychia stage.

Paronychia often occurs on the toes, and many people think that paronychia only occurs on the toes.
In fact, paronychia may also occur on the fingers.

Redness, swelling and the appearance of purulent infection are common symptoms of paronychia.

Paronychia on toes is usually caused by our careless way of cutting nails. Improper way of pulling out barbs and frequent wearing of high heels can also cause paronychia.

When paronychia is in the redness and swelling stage, most cases can be cured through local dressing changes and the use of some antibiotics to achieve the effects of anti-infection, swelling reduction and sterilization.

If paronychia develops seriously and an abscess is formed, it needs to be broken and treated in time to discharge pus; when the inflammation develops to the root of the nail, some special treatment is needed locally, such as partial or complete removal of the nail, combined with oral antibiotics, which can speed up the healing of paronychia.

After suffering from paronychia, you should pay attention to wearing loose shoes and not trim the nails excessively on both sides. You can use internal medications, oral antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs, or external medications or red and blue light, helium-neon laser irradiation.

If local suppuration occurs, it is best to perform surgical incision and drainage or half-nail resection.

To avoid the occurrence of paronychia, we must start from the source, the sharp corners.

If your nails are hooked, it is best to cut them off with scissors. Do not pull out the nails at will or force them out. Otherwise, blood will probably flow out.

At the same time, we must also be careful not to trim the nails too short, exposing the flesh under the nail bed and causing infection and damage.

When soaking in hot water, the water temperature should be controlled at about 60℃ to prevent burns; try to avoid wearing shoes and socks after paronychia occurs to avoid worsening of symptoms.

If you like to tear off the dead skin on your hands or feet, it can easily lead to bacterial infection. Say "No!" to this habit. If there are some minor wounds on your fingers, you can use a bandage to prevent further infection.

Patients should also pay attention to wearing shoes of appropriate size and fit to perfectly avoid the attack of paronychia.

If you find that your toes are pressing against each other, you can try putting an appropriate amount of sterilized cotton or soft objects between the toes to separate them from each other and prevent the toenails from being pressed into the nail groove and causing paronychia.

If you suffer from paronychia, you should also be careful of fish bones, sewing needles, wood thorns, bamboo thorns and other things that can easily get into the nail groove, because if you are not careful they can add salt to your wound, which is very concerning.

Paronychia can also heal itself, but it depends on the patient. If the patient has a strong resistance, the abscess can burst and drain by itself, and then heal itself. It just takes a little longer, even one to two months.
