Hidden disease risks cannot be ignored

Not long ago

Ms. Ling, who lives in Foshan, Guangdong

Almost got into big trouble just because of "stroking the cat"

On December 5, Ms. Ling went to Foshan Second People's Hospital for medical treatment due to fever and difficulty breathing that had lasted for a week.

According to the doctor, Ms. Ling was conscious when she sought medical treatment. At first, Ms. Ling's symptoms were alleviated through medication.

But later, Ms. Ling's condition suddenly worsened, her lungs turned into "white lungs", and she even suffered respiratory failure and fell into a coma.

On the morning of December 9, in the intensive care unit of Foshan Second People's Hospital, Ms. Ling, who had been given a sedative, relied on a ventilator to maintain her breathing. The cause of the illness was a redness and swelling on her waist that had appeared two weeks ago. It has now formed a scab and is about the size of an adult's fingernail.

The doctor diagnosed that this was the wound caused by a tick bite. Ms. Ling was diagnosed with scrub typhus. Currently, Ms. Ling's lung exudation is still severe and her liver is failing.

Yuan Manjuan, deputy chief physician of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Foshan Second People's Hospital: "We have tried high-flow oxygen inhalation, which is non-invasive assisted ventilation, but the improvement was not obvious. Within a day, she had to be intubated and put on a ventilator. If she develops acute respiratory distress syndrome further, she may be given ECMO extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy."

The doctor said that if Ms. Ling can reverse her condition through lung protection strategies within a week or two, it will not have much impact on her future life. However, if the disease continues to progress, her life may be in danger at any time.

It is understood that scrub typhus is an acute natural epidemic infectious disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. It is highly prevalent in the south, mainly transmitted by rodents and spread through the bites of chiggers to the human body.

Scrub typhus is generally caused by bites from ticks in outdoor grass or other places, but Ms. Ling did not go to outdoor grass, so how did she get the disease?

After repeated questioning, the doctor learned that Ms. Ling was a clerk and that a cat of unknown origin often came to play with Ms. Ling near her office. The doctor judged that it was very likely that the tick bitten Ms. Ling through this cat.

The doctor explained that chiggers may exist wherever there are mice. The cat that Ms. Ling petted may have come into contact with mice before, so she may have been bitten by chiggers inadvertently. However, because chiggers are small, it is not easy for people to detect them after being bitten.

According to reports, the disease is caused by chiggers biting the human body, which then transmits a microorganism called Rickettsia. Rickettsia multiplies in large numbers in the human body, causing damage to various organs. In severe cases, it can cause shock, multiple organ damage, liver and kidney failure, respiratory failure, etc.

Doctors remind: Scrub typhus is more common in the south. Citizens should be vigilant whether they are playing with cats or doing outdoor activities. If they have a fever or find obvious eschar on their body, they should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

I didn't expect it

"Pet a cat" can cause such a big disaster

actually

Cats are not hosts of chiggers

But if you keep going around like this, you will get scrub typhus

So friends who like to pet cats, please pay attention

Saw some stray cats outside

I think they are cute so I will tease and feed them.

There's nothing wrong with that

But you must pay attention to hygiene
