A little effort can achieve a great result - clever body position transfer for hemiplegic patients

Stroke has four major characteristics: high morbidity, high mortality, high disability rate, and high recurrence rate. With the improvement of neurological and neurosurgery treatment technology, the mortality rate has decreased, and the disability rate has increased significantly. Hemiplegia refers to movement disorders in the upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs on the same side. It is a common symptom of acute cerebrovascular disease and is more common in stroke patients. In order to improve the quality of life of hemiplegic patients, we often use tools to assist patients in movement. Wheelchairs are important auxiliary tools. They are a means of transportation for people with limb disabilities such as hemiplegia, allowing patients to exercise and participate in social activities with the help of wheelchairs. Correctly mastering the use of wheelchairs can improve the quality of life of patients, reduce the intensity of family care, and help patients recover and train.

Operation process

Check the wheelchair, paying special attention to whether the brakes, tires, pedals, and safety belts are intact. Push it to the end of the bed when it can be used normally, so that the backrest of the wheelchair is at a 40°-45° angle to the end of the bed, and place the wheelchair on the patient's healthy side. Flip up the pedals, pull the brakes and secure the wheelchair. Assist the patient to sit up slowly. Sit the patient on the edge of the bed and help him put on comfortable shoes.

Help the patient to hang his legs down under the bed, lean forward, put his feet on the ground, and put the stronger foot slightly backward. The family member stands facing the patient with hip dorsiflexion, with the lower limbs spread apart and on both sides of the patient's legs, and clamps the outside of the patient's knees with both knees to fix them. The family member lifts the patient's arm with one hand and pulls the belt upward with the other hand, helping the patient to put his feet on the ground and lean his trunk forward. Pull the patient forward and upward.

The patient hugs the family member's neck or puts his healthy hand on the family member's shoulder blade, and pushes forward and upward with the family member to complete the arm and leg extension to stand. The patient can let the head rest on the family member's shoulder near the wheelchair.

Adjust the patient's center of gravity so that both lower limbs bear weight upright and maintain standing balance.

After the patient stands firmly, the family member slowly rotates the torso with the feet as the axis, so that the patient's back turns towards the wheelchair and the buttocks face the front of the wheelchair. The patient then slowly bends over and sits flat on the wheelchair.

Help the patient sit up, flip down the footrest, and place the patient's feet on it. If the weather is cold, consider keeping warm, cover with a quilt or blanket, and then push the stroller to the destination.

Note: 1. During the operation, pay attention to the patient's safety, stability, comfort and warmth, move gently and steadily, and pay attention to protecting the family member's own waist.

2. When transporting, the patient's body should be kept as close to the family as possible to ensure stability and save effort.

3. Do not push the cart too fast; do not hit the door with the cart when pushing the cart into the room; if you are moving a patient with impaired consciousness, you may need help from other people to prevent accidents.

4. When pushing a wheelchair to transport a patient, the patient's condition should be observed at all times.

The patient's quality of life cannot be separated from the careful care of family members and nursing staff. I wish hemiplegic patients a speedy recovery!
