Growth habits of peony

It likes warm, cool, dry and sunny environment. It likes sunlight, but also tolerates semi-shade, cold, drought and weak alkali. It avoids stagnant water, heat and direct sunlight. It is suitable for growing in loose, deep, fertile, high and dry, well-drained neutral sandy loam. It grows poorly in acidic or heavy clay soil.

Sufficient sunlight is beneficial to its growth, but it cannot tolerate the scorching sun in summer. Temperatures above 25°C will cause the plant to go dormant. The optimum temperature for flowering is 17-20°C, but it must be treated with a low temperature of 1-10°C for 2-3 months before flowering. It can tolerate a low temperature of -30°C at the lowest, but in the cold northern regions, appropriate cold prevention measures must be taken in winter to avoid frost damage. The high temperature and high humidity in the south are extremely unfavorable to the growth of peonies. Therefore, the cultivation of peonies in the south requires specific environmental conditions to enjoy the beautiful peony flowers.

How to grow peonies indoors

Before planting the peony in a pot, dig out the seedlings and dry them for 1 to 2 days to soften the roots and make them easier to prune and plant. Before planting, place the flower pot in a pool to absorb enough water. When planting, first place a tile under the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot to prevent soil leakage; then lay 2 to 5 cm thick pebbles or waste palm ropes for easy drainage. Before planting, the peony seedlings should be shaped and pruned to balance the above-ground and underground parts, and the shape should be beautiful and easy to cultivate and manage. First, cut off the dead branches, fallen leaves and overlong roots, and disinfect the roots in a 1% copper sulfate solution for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, place the seedlings in the center of the pot and fill the soil for planting, compacting it with your hands while filling the soil, and stop filling the soil when it is 3 to 5 cm away from the upper edge of the pot. After potting, the surface of the pot can be decorated with Taihu stone, Ying stone, and bamboo stone to accompany the peony plants. This not only increases the beauty of the potted peony, making the surface of the pot green and full of vitality, but also plays a role in moisturizing and heat insulation.

(I) Watering. Potted plants have a small capacity, little soil, and limited water holding capacity. Watering is necessary to maintain the normal water requirement of the peony. Water thoroughly once immediately after planting, and water once every 3 to 4 days thereafter to keep the soil moist. If the soil is too wet, it will easily cause the branches and leaves to grow too long. If it is too wet or waterlogged for a long time, the roots will rot. Especially in summer and autumn, the humidity of the potting soil should be controlled, and watering should be avoided unless it is dry. If it is too wet, the buds will grow vigorously in autumn, but it will not bloom in the next spring.

(ii) Fertilization. The nutrients in the potting soil are limited. Only timely topdressing can ensure the normal growth and development of the peony. Topdressing can start in the spring of the following year. Soak sesame, peanuts, and bean cakes in water and ferment them before use. Water should be adjusted when applying. Fertilize 1 to 2 times a week during the growing season. Water once a day before and during flowering. After the flowers fade, it is advisable to spray fertilizer on the leaves. No topdressing is required during the winter dormancy period.

In addition to open-field cultivation, peonies can also be potted for viewing. The best planting season is September to October. Potted peonies should be selected from varieties such as Luoyang Red, Hu Hong, and Zhao Fen, which have strong adaptability, early flowering, and good flower shapes. Plants should be selected from 3-4 year old small peonies grafted with peony rootstocks or ramet seedlings with 3-5 branches.

Peony is native to Hebei and Northeast my country. It likes a semi-shady environment with sufficient scattered light. It is relatively cold-resistant, but afraid of high temperatures in midsummer and strong sunlight. Therefore, it is suitable to be placed under a large tree in the courtyard, under a grape trellis, on the shady side of a tall building, or on an east-facing or north-facing balcony. During the summer dormancy period, it should be placed in a well-ventilated shaded place without direct sunlight, and water should be sprinkled on the nearby ground frequently to increase air humidity and reduce temperature.
