How is Tibet's regional economy?

In the old Tibet, the economy was very backward, transportation was blocked, there was no modern industry, only animal husbandry and a small amount of agriculture and handicrafts. Since the democratic reform in 1959, especially since the implementation of reform and opening up in 1978, the pace of economic construction in the Tibet Autonomous Region has been accelerating, not only has modern industry, transportation and communication been established, but the original agriculture, animal husbandry and commerce have also made great progress.

In 2018, the region's gross domestic product (GDP) reached 147.763 billion yuan, up 9.1% year-on-year at comparable prices. Among them: the added value of the primary industry was 13.025 billion yuan, up 3.4%; the added value of the secondary industry was 62.837 billion yuan, up 17.5%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 71.901 billion yuan, up 4.1%. The per capita GDP was 43,397 yuan, up 7.0%. Converted at the annual average US dollar exchange rate, the per capita GDP was US$6,558.0.

What is Tibet's primary industry?

The total crop planting area was 268,530 hectares, an increase of 9,800 hectares over the previous year, including: highland barley area was 139,580 hectares, an increase of 5,560 hectares over the previous year; wheat area was 31,730 hectares, a decrease of 7,620 hectares; rapeseed area was 22,430 hectares, an increase of 0.44 hectares; vegetable area was 24,000 hectares, an increase of 0.73 hectares.

The total grain output for the whole year was 1.044 million tons, down 0.1% from the previous year, of which highland barley was 777,200 tons, up 2.2%, rapeseed was 58,200 tons, down 1.6%, and vegetables was 725,700 tons, down 0.5%.

At the end of the year, the total number of livestock on hand was 17.2646 million, a decrease of 299,300 from the end of the previous year, including 6.0673 million cattle, an increase of 141,100, and 10.4607 million sheep, a decrease of 591,800.

The annual output of pork, beef and mutton reached 278,000 tons, a decrease of 7.4% over the previous year; milk production was 408,700 tons, a decrease of 2.8%.

Secondary Industry

The total industrial added value for the whole year was 11.451 billion yuan, an increase of 12.0% over the previous year. The added value of industries above designated size increased by 12.5%. Among industries above designated size, by economic type, state-controlled enterprises increased by 21.7%; joint-stock enterprises increased by 13.1%, and foreign-invested enterprises and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan-invested enterprises decreased by 23.7%. By category, mining industry increased by 6.4%, manufacturing industry increased by 10.6%, and electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply industry increased by 23.2%.

Among the industries above designated size throughout the year, the added value of ferrous metal mining and smelting industry decreased by 5.1% compared with the previous year, non-ferrous metal mining and smelting industry increased by 6.1%, agricultural and sideline food processing industry decreased by 16.7%, food manufacturing industry decreased by 0.9%, wine, beverage and refined tea manufacturing industry decreased by 30.4%, pharmaceutical manufacturing industry increased by 7.0%, non-metallic mineral products industry increased by 37.2%, and electricity, heat production and supply industry increased by 23.9%.
