When to prune Endless Summer Hydrangea? Can Endless Summer be pruned in autumn?

Hydrangea is a flower variety. There are many types of hydrangeas, and different types have different flowering periods. Endless Summer is one of the hydrangeas with a longer flowering period. Proper pruning can make the plant grow better, so when is the best time to prune Endless Summer?

When to prune Endless Summer Hydrangea

The difference between Endless Summer Hydrangea and ordinary hydrangea is that, first, the flowering period of Endless Summer is longer than that of ordinary hydrangea, which can bloom from June to September; second, both new and old branches bloom, while ordinary hydrangeas bloom on old branches. Therefore, the pruning of Endless Summer Hydrangea is done in spring and after flowering.

When pruning Endless Summer Hydrangea in spring, you need to retain a certain number of old branches, and at the same time, you also need to prune the old branches appropriately, cut off dead branches, diseased branches, and thin branches, and the old branches that grow new branches should be cut off from the base of the new branches. The best time for spring pruning is before March. In March, Endless Summer Hydrangea begins to differentiate flower buds. Once the flower buds grow, they can no longer be pruned. Pruning must wait until after flowering.

Can Endless Summer be pruned in autumn?

Pruning is possible in autumn, but it is not recommended to cut off all the branches.

Because its flowers actually bloom at the top of the branches. If they are cut off in autumn, it will be a bit difficult to make it bloom next year or in the spring of the second year. There will either be no flowers or very few flowers.

Be careful when pruning Endless Summer. When pruning, you can cut off some dry, thin, weak, and incapable branches, but do not top or prune strong branches. You can give it some thin fertilizer in autumn. Or you can change it to a larger pot, water it normally, expose it to the sun, water it when the pot soil is dry, and keep the pot soil free of water. Then it will bloom normally in the spring of the second year.

How to prune Endless Summer after it blooms

If you prune the Endless Summer Hydrangea in time after it blooms, it can encourage it to bloom in autumn. The key to pruning after flowering is to determine the pruning position. If the plant is not tall and the plant shape is very compact, just find a pair of plump buds under the flower and cut off the withered flowers 1 cm above the buds. If the plant grows taller, the pruning position can be moved down appropriately, but you must find the right buds and prune above the buds, and appropriately cut off the dense branches.

Management of Endless Summer Hydrangea after pruning in summer is very important, mainly the management of light and fertilization. The light should be sufficient, but avoid direct sunlight. It should be exposed to more light in the morning and evening, and shaded appropriately at noon. Insufficient light will affect the differentiation of flower buds. Nitrogen fertilizer should be added in time after pruning to allow the hydrangea to resume growth as soon as possible. In the future, less nitrogen fertilizer should be applied and phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be used as the main fertilizer, so that the Endless Summer Hydrangea can bloom again in autumn.
