Can the car thermostat be removed? What are the disadvantages of removing the thermostat?

Although the thermostat is not as "famous" as the engine, brakes, tires, etc., it still has a role. It can ensure that the temperature of the engine is appropriate when it is working, and it has the functions of cooling water temperature and regulating heat dissipation. The heating we use in winter is inseparable from it. So can the car thermostat be removed?

Can the car thermostat be removed?

It is recommended not to remove it, as the thermostat has a heat dissipation function.

The normal operating temperature of the engine is about 90°C. In order to quickly reach the operating temperature of the engine, an idle lift valve and thermostat are designed.

When the thermostat is cold started, it uses a small circulation of water. When the temperature is around 85℃, the thermostat is fully opened to use a large circulation. As the temperature changes, the thermostat thermistor adjusts the opening at any time to control the water flow to keep the engine water temperature within the normal working range.

When the water temperature is normal, the idle speed will drop to the normal idle speed of about 750 rpm. Then, if the thermostat is removed or the thermostat is broken, the engine water temperature cannot be controlled normally.

The thermostat can only be temporarily removed when it fails, and it cannot be removed for a long time. If the thermostat is removed, the water temperature cannot quickly reach the normal water temperature. Long-term low water temperature will reduce combustion efficiency and increase fuel consumption. At the same time, the gap between parts will become larger, causing the engine oil to burn.

What are the disadvantages of removing the thermostat?

① It is not easy to reduce the idle speed to normal. It may take longer. Especially in winter, it may always be in a low-temperature working state. If there is no thermostat, it means that the water temperature rises slowly, and it warms up slowly.

② Since the temperature rises slowly, the engine computer adjusts the oil volume according to the temperature, which will lead to increased fuel consumption.

③ Too low engine operating temperature will accelerate the early wear of the cylinder liner and piston.

④ Due to low temperature and high idle speed, it is difficult to shift gears, or there is a noise when shifting gears, which causes damage to the transmission synchronizer.

Under normal circumstances, it is not a big deal to have a thermostat in summer, but it is mainly in winter, especially in cold areas, that it will have a great impact. In our area, the temperature is high all year round. If it is an old car, due to the scale in the waterway, the gray tip outside the water tank, and the impurities covering it, the engine water temperature is high. We deliberately remove the thermostat in summer and install it in winter. Of course, we do not recommend doing this.

Thermostat function

The thermostat is installed inside the car engine, and its main function is to control the circulation of the engine water system. Its purpose is to make the water temperature rise faster.

There are two advantages to the rapid rise in water temperature. First, we can use the heater as soon as possible in winter. Second, high water temperature can improve the atomization effect of fuel and make gasoline burn more fully.

At present, thermostats all use paraffin sensors. Paraffin controls the coolant circulation through the principle of thermal expansion and contraction. When the water temperature reaches a certain temperature, the thermostat will open, and the engine coolant will dissipate heat through the water tank, and the engine will start a large circulation. When the thermostat checks that the temperature is too low, the refined paraffin in the thermostat sensor body becomes solid, and the thermostat valve is closed by the return spring. The engine coolant no longer passes through the water tank, but only circulates in the engine, commonly known as a small circulation.
