Normal range for thalassemia screening

Normal range for thalassemia screening

Thalassemia is a genetic disease. Some babies are born with this disease, so it is necessary to screen for it, and parents of newborns also need to have a basic understanding of it. So, how much is the thalassemia screening standard for newborn babies worth?

Thalassemia belongs to the group of inherited hemolytic anemias, also known as thalassemia or thalassemia. It is mainly due to genetic defects that cause the lack or insufficiency of one or more types of globin chains in the hemoglobin concentration, leading to the pathological condition of anemia.

The normal reference index values for thalassemia screening in newborns are red blood cell count (rbc) ranging from 3.5 to 5.0, the mean rbc volume reference range value is 82 to 95, the mean rbc hemoglobin concentration component reference range standard is 27 to 31, and the Rbc distribution width standard value range is 37 to 54.

Thalassemia is a genetic disease, which is divided into thalassemia type A and thalassemia type B. Different types of thalassemia have different types and numbers of thalassemia genes, so the severity of the disease is also different. People with mild thalassemia generally do not have anemia or only have mild anemia, and can live a normal daily life like normal people. However, certain treatment measures are required for minor, medium and severe thalassemia. Especially in severe thalassemia, repeated intravenous injections are required to correct severe anemia. Therefore, screening for thalassemia in newborns is also an important test, which requires close cooperation from parents.

Prenatal screening for thalassemia:

1. Eosinophil ratio (EO%) 0.057 Reference range: 0.005--0.05

2. Alkali phagocytosis ratio (BASO%) 0.015 Reference range: 0--0.01

3. Red blood cell count (RBC) 6.9 Reference range: 4.0--5.5

4. Mean RBC volume (MCV) 63 Reference range: 82--95

5. Mean RBC hemoglobin concentration (MCH) 20.2 Reference range: 27--31

6. RBC distribution width coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) 0.156 Reference range: 0.114--0.145

7. Platelet distribution width (PDW) 23.3 Reference range: 9--17

8. RBC packed volume (HCT) 0.335 Reference range: 0.36--0.43
