Later, he resigned and returned to his hometown, and led his clan to take refuge in Jizhou, where he was treated as a distinguished guest by Yuan Shao. Later, he defected to Cao Cao. Because he served as the Minister of the Secretariat, held a central position for more than ten years, and handled military and political affairs, he was respectfully called "Xun Lingjun". Later, because he opposed Cao Cao's title of Duke of Wei, he was jealous of Cao Cao, and was transferred away from the central government and committed suicide in Shouchun at the age of fifty. A brief plot of the "Warm Wine and Execution of Hua Xiong" in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Cao Cao recruited troops and joined forces with Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan, Sun Jian and other 17 armies to attack Dong Zhuo. Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei followed Gongsun Zan. Dong Zhuo's general Hua Xiong defeated Sun Jian, the vanguard of the 18 armies, and killed two generals in front of the battle, feeling very proud.

The 18 lords were all panicked and helpless. Yuan Shao said, "It's a pity that my generals Yan Liang and Wen Chou are not here, otherwise, we won't be afraid of Hua Xiong." As soon as he finished speaking, Guan Yu shouted, "I am willing to chop off Hua Xiong's head." Yuan Shao thought Guan Yu was just a horse archer, so he said angrily, "We have hundreds of generals from the 18 lords, but we have to send a horse archer to fight. Isn't it a joke for Hua Xiong?" Guan Yu shouted, "If I can't kill Hua Xiong, please chop off my head." Cao Cao was very impressed. So he poured a cup of hot wine and handed it to Guan Yu, saying, "General, drink this cup of wine before going to kill the enemy." Guan Yu took the cup and put it on the table and said, "Wait until I kill Hua Xiong and then come back to drink." After that, he took the sword and got on the horse. Guan Yu was very skilled in martial arts. After a while, he chopped off Hua Xiong's head. When he returned to the military camp, Cao Cao quickly picked up the cup on the table and handed it to him. At this time, the wine in the cup was not cold yet.
