Is GBS screening a leucorrhea test?

During pregnancy, many examinations need to be done, and GBS screening is one of them. This test can check whether the pregnant woman is infected with group B streptococcus. If infected, treatment should be carried out immediately, otherwise it may affect the fetus. Therefore, GBS screening is also a very important examination item. So, is GBS screening uncomfortable? Is GBS screening a routine check for leucorrhea?

Is GBS screening a routine check for leucorrhea?

GBS screening is not a routine examination of leucorrhea, but one of the prenatal examinations in late pregnancy. GBS screening requires the collection of vaginal and duodenal swab specimens for testing. The vaginal swab specimens do not require the use of a dilator and are collected at 1/3 of the vulva. Routine leucorrhea inspection requires the use of a dilator and is collected from the posterior vaginal fornix and the inner and outer walls of the vagina. In addition, the duodenal swab needs to be collected about 2 cm deep in the anus. Pregnant women infected with GBS may give birth to premature babies or stillbirths, so it should be taken seriously.

Is GBS screening uncomfortable?

GBS screening is generally not uncomfortable. It mainly involves collecting some secretions from the pregnant woman's vagina and then checking whether there is group B streptococcus in the secretions. If group B streptococcus is found, treatment is required as soon as possible. The whole process of this examination is very simple and generally painless, but the physical fitness of pregnant women is different, so some pregnant women may feel slight discomfort in the lower body during GBS screening, but it is only mild discomfort and will not cause too obvious discomfort.

Most women have group B streptococcus in their bodies, and if they choose to give birth naturally, the baby may be infected with group B streptococcus through the vagina. Once the baby is infected with group B streptococcus, it will affect the child's health, and it is easy to cause the baby to get pneumonia, sepsis, and even endanger the baby's life. Therefore, it is best for pregnant women to check whether they are infected with group B streptococcus during pregnancy, so that they can find it as early as possible and take measures for treatment as soon as possible, thereby effectively avoiding infection of the baby.
