How long is a woman's cervix?

The uterus is an important female reproductive organ and is also an area prone to disease. Comprehensive understanding of the condition of the uterus can help us understand our own condition as quickly as possible. Under abnormal circumstances, the uterus can be treated critically, otherwise it may cause infertility. Many women worry about the length of their uterus. So, how long is the normal length of the cervical canal is a question that many women are very concerned about.

How long is a woman's cervix?

Our normal uterus is 7 to 8 cm long, 3 to 4 cm wide and 2 to 3 cm thick.

The ratio is different during puberty, reproductive age and after menopause. How is it different? For example, for women during puberty, the ratio of cervix to uterus is 2 to 1. During childbearing age, the situation is reversed. The uterus is larger, about 2 to 1, and the cervix is shorter. For a postmenopausal woman, the ratio of her cervix to uterus is 1:1. So according to this calculation, for a woman of childbearing age, the length of her cervix should be between 2.3 and 2.7 centimeters.

Will the length of the cervix lengthen?

The cervix varies with male hormone levels, age, endocrine system, vaginal pH and pathological conditions, but may be located in a different position. If estrogen levels are high, such as with a woman's age, the transfer zone will move outward to the cervical region, exposing the columnar epithelial cells in the cervical canal. Generally, the position of the cervix is relatively stable.

The blood supply of the cervix mainly comes from the uterine artery, which reaches the sides of the uterus through the paracervical tissue. The uterus is located approximately 2 cm from the urethra to the edges of the two sides of the uterus and is divided into two left and right branches. The lower branches are distributed throughout the cervix and upper vagina, called the cervical and vaginal branches, and the veins cooperate with each other. The cervical nerves mainly originate from the presacral plexus, most of which form the pelvic plexus around the cervix and are distributed in the uterine body and cervix.

The length of the cervix is about 4 cm and the total width of the cervix is about 4 mm. In normal pregnancy, there is no significant difference in cervical length and cervical canal width. Accurate measurement of cervical length and width by intravaginal ultrasound is an important method for predicting premature birth and preterm delivery. Statistical analysis showed that the mean cervical length was (36±5) mm, and the mean cervical canal width was (4 1) mm. Taking cervical length less than 26 mm as the cutoff value, the sensitivity of preterm infants was 100%, the specificity was 81%, the positive predictive value was 55%, and the negative predictive value was 100%. A cervix that is too short and too wide is a sign of an incompetent cervix.
