Why did I still get pregnant after taking birth control pills?

In daily life, female friends may have unprotected sex for some reasons, or get pregnant accidentally (such as condom damage, dislocation, missed or wrong dose of short-term contraceptive pills, etc.), or take contraceptives when encountering emergencies such as accidents.

But what puzzled them was that they still got pregnant! According to statistics, the effectiveness of birth control pills is about 80%, which means that about 20% of women still fail after taking birth control pills!

What causes birth control pills to be ineffective?

1 Already pregnant

If you have had several unprotected sexual intercourses before taking birth control pills, and the sperm and egg from the last intercourse have successfully implanted in the uterus, birth control pills will no longer have a contraceptive effect.

In other words, taking birth control pills while already pregnant is unlikely to have the effect of terminating the pregnancy.

2. Taking medicine several times during a menstrual period

Contraceptive pills are only effective for unprotected intercourse that has already occurred. Women who have unprotected intercourse again after taking the pills may still get pregnant.

If you only use contraceptive pills once in a menstrual cycle, they may not be effective the second time. Therefore, you should not have unprotected sexual life after taking the medicine until your menstrual period resumes.

3. Taking medicine for more than 72 hours

The actual effectiveness of contraceptive measures is related to the length of time between intercourse and the application of therapeutic drugs. The sooner emergency contraception is used after sexual intercourse, the better the actual effect. As the time of taking the medicine increases, the rate of accidental pregnancy tends to increase.

Some women fail to follow the instructions on the drug label and take the drug for more than 72 hours.

4. Effects of antibiotics and other therapeutic drugs

If you take other medications while taking birth control pills, you may get pregnant accidentally. For example, emergency contraception should not be chosen during antibiotic treatment.

Because antibiotics can inhibit the growth of bacteria in the stomach and reduce the dissolution of hormone complexes, they will destroy the normal bacteria in the stomach and intestines, causing the reduction of bacterial specificity, affecting the normal circulation of steroid hormones in the liver and stomach, resulting in a decrease in the concentration of steroid hormones in the blood, and thus causing accidental pregnancy.
