Normal value of the lower edge distance from the uterine os

Normal value of the lower edge distance from the uterine os

In fact, natural childbirth has extremely high requirements for the condition of the child. If the child's lower edge is lower than the cervical os, a caesarean section is needed to ensure the safety of the fetus and the pregnant woman to a greater extent. When the pregnant woman is undergoing relevant examinations, the doctor will also check and judge the value of the lower edge from the intrauterine os. So what is the normal value of the lower edge from the intrauterine os?

Generally speaking, if the lower edge of the placenta is more than 7 cm away from the internal os of the cervix, it is a placenta in a normal position. The minimum distance should be 5cm. If the lower edge of the placenta reaches, approaches or covers the internal cervical os, we call it placenta previa. Placenta previa is one of the serious complications in late pregnancy. The main symptom is frequent, painless vaginal bleeding. If the lower edge of the placenta is more than 5 cm away from the internal cervical os, bleeding is rare. When pregnant women have prenatal checkups in the outpatient clinic, the location of the placenta is usually reported during the B-ultrasound examination.

What to do if the lower edge is close to the uterine os

If you find that the placenta is too low in the early and middle stages of pregnancy, and the lower edge of the placenta is too close to the cervical opening, then you don't need to worry too much, because as the gestational age increases, the placenta will slowly rise, but it will not rise to the normal position. The normal distance between the placenta and the cervical opening is greater than or equal to 30mm. If the distance between the placenta and the cervical opening is less than 30mm, it means that the fetus is not suitable for natural delivery. For the safety of the mother, the best way of delivery is still caesarean section. Of course, this doesn’t mean that natural birth is not possible, it’s just that the chance of bleeding during natural birth is higher.

If the lower edge of the placenta is >20mm away from the internal cervical os, it is best to choose a cesarean section. Some people say that the lower edge of the placenta is only 26mm away from the internal os of the cervix, and the baby was born naturally. This situation does exist, but it is relatively rare. As we mentioned before, it does not mean that if the placenta is too low, a natural birth is impossible. Rather, the chance of a difficult birth during a natural birth is relatively high. In order to avoid heavy bleeding during delivery, it is best for female friends to choose a cesarean section to remove the placenta.

We all know that in the past, many women died from difficult childbirth because they had no choice of the method of delivery. Nowadays, with the improvement of medical technology, we can choose safer methods of delivery. Therefore, since the placenta is too low and is not conducive to normal delivery, women must choose the safest method of delivery for the sake of their own lives.

We all know that the distance between the placenta and the cervix cannot be changed after the 28th week of pregnancy, but it can be changed before the 28th week of pregnancy. If the placenta is located too low, not only will there be heavy bleeding during delivery, but it may also cause bleeding during pregnancy, leading to miscarriage or premature birth. Therefore, women with a low placenta should not overwork, otherwise it is easy to cause bleeding problems. Therefore, if the lower edge of the placenta is >20mm away from the internal os of the cervix, it may also cause bleeding problems.
