The chance of pregnancy with a weak positive pregnancy test

Many women who are preparing for pregnancy will choose to use early pregnancy test strips or pregnancy test sticks to detect whether they are pregnant. Many women will have a weak positive result after the test. In fact, if the pregnancy test shows a weak positive result, then it can basically be determined that the woman is pregnant, but there may be adverse conditions such as ectopic pregnancy or biochemical pregnancy.

1. Pregnancy less than 10 days

The pregnancy test stick determines whether a woman is pregnant by testing the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in her urine. If a woman has just become pregnant, the hCG concentration in her urine will be relatively low, and the results of the pregnancy test stick will appear dark and light on consecutive days.

Recommendation: Women with regular menstrual cycles should calculate their ovulation day. Generally, women ovulate between two menstrual periods. For example, if the menstrual cycle is 28 days, the ovulation day may be around the 14th day. It takes about 7-10 days for the fertilized egg to implant. Only after implantation will the placenta be formed and hCG will be produced. However, the amount of hCG produced at the beginning is relatively small, and it will take at least a week to slowly increase. Therefore, it is best to do a pregnancy test about 14 days after having sex.

2. The pregnancy test method is wrong

If the person taking the pregnancy test drinks too much water before the test and does not use the morning urine test, the hCG concentration in the urine will not be high and the pregnancy test stick will show a weak positive result of one dark and one light color.

Recommendation: You don’t need to drink a lot of water before every pregnancy test. Try to use the first urine in the morning for testing. Therefore, the hcg concentration in the urine at this time is the highest in the day, and the pregnancy test result is more accurate. If you take a pregnancy test at other times, make sure that the urine is in the bladder for at least 4 hours.

3. It may be an ectopic pregnancy

If the sperm and egg implant normally in the uterus, the amount of hCG secreted will be more than that of extrauterine pregnancy, and the color of your test will be darker, showing a strong positive. However, if it is an ectopic pregnancy, due to the insufficient concentration of hCG secreted, a weak positive result of one dark and one light will be tested.

Recommendation: If the pregnancy test stick shows a weak positive result after the menstruation is delayed, you should go to the hospital for an ultrasound examination as soon as one month into the pregnancy to see whether the fetal development is normal or whether it is an ectopic pregnancy.

4. It may be a biochemical pregnancy

Biochemical pregnancy means that HCG can be produced when the sperm and egg form a trophoblast layer 6 days after fertilization. After the fertilized egg implants, the HCG biochemical indicator can be detected. If it is greater than 25mlU/mL or the pregnancy test stick or urine test shows a positive or weakly positive pregnancy result, but the gestational sac cannot be seen during ultrasound examination, it indicates that the fertilized egg has failed to implant. If the pregnancy test stick detects a weak positive result of one dark and one light continuously, but then no test results appear again, it may be that implantation has not been successful, which means you are not pregnant.

Generally, this situation is due to the poor quality of the embryo itself, or the combination of the fertilized egg is an occasional chromosomal mutation or natural survival of the fittest. This situation is currently more common in in vitro fertilization.

Recommendation: If the pregnancy test stick does not show any darkening trend for more than 3 consecutive days, it means that there may be a problem with the embryo. This is the result of nature's elimination and generally will not affect the next pregnancy. If this happens multiple times, you should go to the hospital for further examination.
