Can pregnant women smoke in the first three months?

Due to the increasing pressure of modern life, many women have become addicted to smoking. Because smoking is an addictive behavior, it is very difficult to quit smoking once you are addicted. Many women do not quit smoking after they become pregnant. When the craving strikes, everyone knows that it will give people a feeling of ants scratching their hearts. Some pregnant women who cannot control their smoking addiction will consider the impact of smoking in the first three months of pregnancy on the fetus.

Regarding the relationship between smoking and pregnancy, clinical observations and large-scale studies around the world have confirmed that smoking is harmful to pregnant women and has no benefits. Even though some of the causal mechanisms are still unclear, the impact of smoking (whether smoking yourself or inhaling second-hand smoke) on pregnant women and fetuses is undoubted.

Studies have shown that women who smoke have a 30% lower chance of getting pregnant than non-smoking women. Smoking can also reduce the fertility potential of male sperm. Because nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarettes can reduce blood supply to the placenta, the fetus is more likely to have intrauterine growth retardation, and the chances of premature birth and even miscarriage will also increase. According to statistics, pregnant women who smoke are twice as likely to give birth to low birth weight babies (birth weight less than 2500 grams) as non-smoking pregnant women! The main reasons for low birth weight in babies are intrauterine growth retardation and premature birth.

Moreover, smoking increases the chance of ectopic pregnancy, placenta previa and placental abruption, the latter two of which are the main causes of uterine bleeding in late pregnancy.

In addition, if you smoke during pregnancy or frequently inhale secondhand smoke, your child will be more likely to have learning disabilities or behavioral problems in the future. Therefore, expectant mothers should pay special attention to their daily behavioral habits and prepare for good birth and upbringing.
