Generally, this situation is likely to be caused by intercostal neuralgia and possibly costochondria. It is best to go to the hospital for a check-up. In daily life, you should combine work and rest, keep warm, avoid catching cold, eat a light diet, and avoid spicy and irritating foods. Quit smoking and drinking, and stay up late less.

Once the intercostal nerves are damaged and are compressed or irritated, it can easily cause pain in the chest, intercostal space or abdomen, which is called intercostal neuralgia. In clinical treatment, massage techniques can be used to relieve pain symptomatically. For example, the Qimen point can soothe the liver and relieve pain, which is beneficial to improving intercostal neuralgia; the Riyue points can soothe the liver and regulate qi, and are mainly used as an auxiliary treatment for chest pain and burning sensation in the chest and abdomen, and can effectively relieve intercostal neuralgia.

Acupuncture point selection method

Quepen Point: Quepen Point is located in the center of the supraclavicular fossa of the human body, 4 inches away from the anterior midline.

Tanzhong point: Tanzhong point is located between the two nipples, on the midline of the sternum, at the level of the fourth intercostal space.

Qimen Point: Qimen Point is located on the chest, directly below the nipple, in the 6th intercostal space, 4 inches lateral to the anterior midline. (Aligned with Juque point)

Sun and Moon Point: Sun and Moon Point is located on the abdomen of the human body, directly below the nipple, in the 7th intercostal space, 4 inches lateral to the anterior midline.

Shenshu point: Shenshu point is located on the waist of the human body, below the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra, about two fingers wide (first, people should stand upright or sit upright, then inhale, we first touch the lower edge of our ribs, on the side of the waist, draw a horizontal line along the lower edge of the ribs, cross the muscles on both sides of our waist, this is the Shenshu point.)

Zhigou Point: Zhigou Point is located on the dorsal side of the human forearm, on the line connecting Dangyangchi and the tip of the elbow, 3 inches above the distal transverse line on the dorsal side of the wrist, between the ulna and radius.

Massage Techniques

1. Make a half fist with one hand, extend the thumb, and use the tip of the thumb to massage the opposite side's supraclavicular fossa with moderate force until you feel a sore and swollen feeling in the shoulder, alternating between the two sides.

2. Press the Tanzhong point with the tip of your thumb and gently push and rub downward, gradually increasing the force until you feel soreness and pain at the point.

3. Sit upright, overlap the palm of your left hand with the back of your right hand, and repeatedly push and rub the Qimen acupoint from the inside to the outside until the local skin becomes warm. After pushing and rubbing, focus on massaging the Qimen acupoint for about 2 minutes.

4. Press the Sun and Moon points with the tip of your middle finger, gradually increasing the pressure until you feel a warm sensation on the local skin.

5. The person being massaged sits down, and the massager holds his waist with one hand and places the other hand, palm facing down, on the kidney point of the person being massaged. Then, massage the kidney point quickly in a clockwise direction until the local skin becomes warm.

6. Press the Zhigou point with the tip of your thumb or a massage stick. Press it with a little more force until you feel soreness and swelling at the point.
