How often should I change my intrauterine device?

Insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive ring is a common method of contraception. For women who have already given birth, if they have no intention of having children again, they can use the IUD for contraception. It is relatively less harmful to women, very convenient to use, and relatively cheap. Of course, you should also understand some precautions when using the IUD. So how often should the intrauterine contraceptive ring be replaced? Let's take a look at this aspect.

How often should I change my intrauterine device?

Intra-uterine device (IUD), also known as contraceptive ring or intrauterine device, is a medical term for an intrauterine device. It is one of the contraceptive tools, which is a tool placed in the uterus. This tool is inserted and removed from the uterus by a doctor or other professional. It is a tool used by women to avoid pregnancy. The IUD uses mechanical stimulation or additional chemical interference (copper/sustained-release contraceptives) to prevent women from becoming pregnant, but it does not suppress ovulation or affect the female endocrine system. It is widely used in mainland China, and more than 40% of people in my country use intrauterine contraceptive rings, commonly known as IUDs. The IUD is very suitable for women with excessive menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea, with a success rate of up to 99%.

1. Stainless steel IUD

It can be left in place for about 20 years, and then removed six months or a year after menopause. Plastic or silicone rubber intrauterine contraceptive devices can be placed for 3-5 years, and plastic-steel hybrid rings can also be placed for 5-10 years.

2. Intrauterine device with progesterone

The placement time still needs to be determined by the total amount of progesterone stored in the IUD and its daily release. Generally speaking, some progesterone will be almost completely released after one year, which means that it needs to be replaced annually, but some can still be used continuously for up to 3-5 years.

3. Copper IUD

Generally, it can be kept for 3-5 years. For example, if women use copper tubes instead of copper wires, it can be kept for 10-15 years.
