Does medical abortion require uterine curettage?

Many people think that medical abortion is very simple, so they will go for it directly no matter what. However, don’t forget to check whether your body is within the range before doing it, because it is very likely that the wrong method of medical abortion or a poor recovery process will lead to residual uterus, and further examination and uterine cleaning are needed.

Basic process

1. Strict screening before medication, including asking about medical history, conducting a full physical examination and gynecological examination, laboratory tests such as urine pregnancy test, vaginal cleanliness, Trichomonas and fungi, blood routine and blood type, and B-ultrasound examination if necessary.

2. The doctor will explain in detail the method of taking the medicine, the efficacy of the medicine and the possible side effects, and the medicine can only be used after obtaining consent.

3. Currently commonly used dosage: Mifepristone dosage is 150-200 mg, which can be taken all at once or divided into several doses within 3 days. On the third day, go to the hospital to add prostaglandin preparations: 1 mg of Carprostol suppository placed in the vagina or 600 micrograms of misoprostol taken orally. Observe in hospital for 6 hours.

4. Monitoring during abortion: During the hospitalization observation period, in addition to paying attention to blood pressure, pulse, and side effects of drugs, all urine and feces must be kept in a clean bedpan, and a dedicated person will check and record the presence of a gestational sac and the time of its excretion, the size of the gestational sac, and the amount of bleeding. If there is active bleeding before or after the expulsion of the fetal sac, uterotonics can be given or curettage can be performed immediately to stop the bleeding.

5. If the fetal sac has not been expelled and bleeding is not excessive after 6 hours of observation, you can go home and follow up on the date specified by the doctor. If tissue is passed at home, it should be brought to the doctor for examination.

It usually takes three to four days to terminate an unwanted pregnancy with medical abortion. Under normal circumstances, it takes four days to take the medicine for medical abortion, on an empty stomach, one tablet each morning and evening for the first three days, and three tablets at a time on the fourth day.

Generally, there is no feeling in the first three days, but the pain becomes more severe after taking the medicine on the fourth day. Some individuals do not react obviously. Not only does medical abortion take a long time, but it also generally requires about 2 weeks of rest. After medical abortion, you should pay attention to vaginal bleeding. Once the amount of vaginal bleeding is greater than the usual menstrual volume or is accompanied by other discomfort symptoms, you must go to the hospital in time to avoid unnecessary trouble to your health.
