When is the best time to do sugar screening in the second trimester?

The physical health of pregnant women is extremely critical to the development of the fetus, and most babies are prone to problems in the pregnant woman's body, which brings great obstacles to development. Among them, Down syndrome is a relatively harmful phenomenon. Once contracted, it is almost impossible to treat, which can only bring a heavy burden to the family. Therefore, Down syndrome screening is a must for pregnant women during pregnancy. Let’s take a look at when is the best time to do the mid-pregnancy sugar screening?

For expectant mothers with a family history of diabetes, obesity and other high-risk factors, the sugar screening test should be performed around 20 weeks of pregnancy. Other expectant mothers should undergo a glucose screening test at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. Because this period is the period of rapid fetal growth, the placenta secretion function of the expectant mother becomes more and more vigorous, and various factors in the body that cause diabetes develop to the most obvious, so it is not easy to miss the diagnosis.

Precautions for sugar screening

1. Reduce the intake of starch, pasta and sugar two weeks before the examination.

(1) Eat as little staple food as possible. The amount of staple food per meal should be less than 2 taels. That is, eat less pasta, rice, and other staple foods. It is best not to eat more than half a catty a day. It is best not to drink rice porridge in the morning, you can use milk instead.

(2) Do not eat high-fat foods and try not to eat sugary foods. Sugary foods here refer to sweets, beverages, and even fruits that contain refined sugar that can be directly absorbed by the human body without any conversion.

(3) Limit the amount of fruit you eat, especially fruits with high sugar content, and eat them between meals.

(4) Eat more vegetables, no less than 500 grams per day, to supplement vitamins and fiber.

(5) Drink plenty of water and exercise moderately. Take a walk after meals to burn off excess sugar.

2. The day before the sugar screening or glucose tolerance test, it is best to eat light vegetarian food and eat less rice. Make stir-fried bitter melon to lower blood sugar.

3. Do not eat after 8 pm the night before and drink less water.

4. Don’t drink powdered sugar too fast. Drink it slowly, little by little. Don’t drink it all in one gulp. Drink it within 3-5 minutes. It is best to walk more after drinking, so that the energy will be consumed within an hour, which will help lower blood sugar levels.
