Back pain while walking during pregnancy

Although pregnancy is a very painful process for women, it is not suitable for women to lie down or sit for a long time during pregnancy. They should get up and exercise appropriately. Because this will help reduce your own pain during childbirth and is also beneficial to the healthy development of the baby in the belly. Since pregnant women need to be extra careful when walking, it is reasonable for some abnormal situations to occur when they walk. But is it normal for pregnant women to have back pain when walking?

Symptoms of back pain in pregnant women

Low back pain in pregnant women is a very common phenomenon during pregnancy and is a normal physiological reaction. In mild cases, there will be back pain, while in severe cases, there will also be symptoms such as leg cramps and sciatica. If pregnant women lack exercise, they are more likely to suffer from back pain. The symptoms of low back pain in early, mid, and late pregnancy are different.

1. Early pregnancy

The low back pain at this stage will not be particularly severe, the pain is relatively mild, mostly waist and back pain. Low back pain during this period is often caused by the retroverted uterus, which compresses the rectum and ligaments, so pregnant women do not need to worry. However, if the following symptoms occur, you need to pay attention.

(1) If low back pain is accompanied by vaginal bleeding and the pain is severe, you should pay attention to the possibility of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy and go to the hospital for examination immediately.

(2) If the lower back pain is severe enough to affect movement or radiate to other parts of the body, you should go to the hospital for examination, find out the cause, and receive timely treatment.

(3) If lower back pain is accompanied by leg cramps, it may be due to calcium deficiency.

(4) Low back and leg pain accompanied by sciatica may be caused by a lack of vitamin B1.

2. Second and third trimester

The back pain that pregnant women experience during this period is because the uterus gradually enlarges due to fetal development. In order to maintain body balance, the upper body begins to lean back, causing excessive lordosis of the spine and continuous tension in the back extensor muscles, resulting in excessive fatigue of the waist and back, which can easily lead to back pain. This pain is not sudden and the symptoms can be relieved after bed rest.

Severe symptoms may affect the fetus, so you should see a doctor in time to avoid serious consequences.

Treatment of back pain in pregnant women

Back pain in pregnant women is one of the common reactions during pregnancy. If there are no other complications, special treatment is generally not required. Regular exercise, maintaining correct walking posture, avoiding standing for long periods of time, and paying more attention to rest can effectively relieve the symptoms of back pain.

1. Mild low back pain

(1) Use a special pregnancy belt. Tie a belt or a special pregnancy belt around the pregnant woman's abdomen to support the pregnant woman's waist and relieve pain.

(2) Maintain a correct standing posture. The correct standing posture is to keep your legs slightly apart, your back straight, your chest up, and your chin tucked in. If you hold your posture correctly, your big belly won't be noticeable. Don't stand up or sit down too quickly, and it's best to have something to hold on to.

(3) Do appropriate exercise. You should also do appropriate exercise during pregnancy, choose suitable gymnastics or swimming for pregnant women, and exercise according to your personal situation to enhance your physical strength.

(4) Choose suitable beds, shoes, etc. Don't sleep on a bed that is too soft, as it can easily cause your waist to sink, causing or aggravating low back pain. Also choose more comfortable shoes and avoid wearing high heels.

(5)Dietary adjustment. You can eat some foods that can relieve back pain in pregnant women: such as foods rich in protein, calcium, B vitamins, vitamins C and D.

(6) Massage and local hot compress. Pregnant women with back pain can do home massage exercises. Have family members help with back massage. You can also apply local hot compresses using hot towels, gauze or hot water bottles. Applying hot compresses for half an hour every day can also relieve pain.

(7) Keep warm. When the weather is cold, you must keep warm. Catching a cold can cause adverse reactions in the kidneys, and in severe cases, it can cause low back pain.

2. Severe back pain

(1) When pain occurs, lie down with the painful side facing upward and your back arched.

(2) Generally, when you feel pain, lying on your back with your face up and placing a large pillow under your knees will be more comfortable.

(3) If the pain is severe and you cannot lie down, you can find a low step to sit on and support your jaw with your hands.

(4) Apply a hot compress with a wet towel or take a bath with hot water.

After severe low back pain subsides, be sure to seek medical attention immediately.
