Side effects of taking progesterone tablets in early pregnancy

Contraindications

1. Cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

2. Damage to liver and kidney function.

3. Diabetes.

4. Asthma.

5. Epilepsy.

6. Migraine.

7. Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.

8. Have a history of thrombosis (except for treatment of advanced cancer).

9. Gallbladder disease.

Precautions

1. (1) Use with caution within 4 months of pregnancy and should not be used as an early pregnancy test. (2) Use with caution in patients with a history of depression. (3) Use with caution in patients with edema.

2. Long-term medication requires liver function checks, with special attention to breast examinations.

3. Currently, natural progesterone is commonly used to treat threatened abortion and habitual abortion. Artificially synthesized progesterone has teratogenic effects on the fetus and must be used with caution.

4. There is no consensus on whether premenstrual syndrome is caused by progesterone deficiency, so the use of progesterone for treatment is still controversial, but it is still used clinically.

5. If jaundice occurs, the medication should be stopped.

Adverse Reactions

1. (1) Gastrointestinal reactions, poor appetite; (2) Acne; (3) Fluid retention and edema; (4) Weight gain; (5) Allergic dermatitis; (6) Mental depression; (7) Breast pain; (8) Changes in female sexual desire; (9) Menstrual disorders, irregular bleeding or amenorrhea; (10) Long-term use can cause endometrial atrophy, decreased menstrual volume, and susceptibility to vaginal fungal infections.

2. Rare adverse reactions include: headache; pain in the chest, buttocks, legs, especially the gastrocnemius muscles; weakness, numbness or pain in the arms and feet; sudden or unexplained shortness of breath, sudden slurred speech, sudden vision changes, diplopia, varying degrees of blindness, etc.

3. Long-term use can cause abnormal liver function and increased incidence of ischemic heart disease; endometrial atrophy, decreased menstrual volume, and susceptibility to vaginal fungal infection.

4. The use of certain progestins with high androgenic activity during early pregnancy may cause masculinization of female offspring; the offspring may suffer from reproductive tract malformations, most commonly hypospadias.
