What is the best contraception during breastfeeding?

If you have sex during breastfeeding, you must take contraceptive measures at this time, because if you become pregnant during breastfeeding, it will have a great impact on women's health. We know that there are many methods of contraception. At this time, you can use some better contraceptive methods, such as using condoms, which is more appropriate during breastfeeding. Let's take a look at this aspect.

What is the best contraception during breastfeeding?

1. Male condoms: They can not only block sperm from entering the female reproductive tract to achieve the contraceptive effect, but also effectively prevent the infection and spread of bacteria, fungi, Trichomonas, protozoa, gonorrhea and viruses, which is especially important for preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

2. External contraceptives (spermicide) Nonoxynol ether: It is a surfactant that can interact with the protein membrane of sperm cells, change the permeability of spermatogonia, and thus kill sperm to achieve the purpose of contraception. External contraceptives do not affect the sexual pleasure of both parties, do not affect endocrine and menstruation, and do not inhibit milk secretion. Commonly used ones include nonoxynol ether film, nonoxynol ether vaginal tablets, nonoxynol ether contraceptive suppositories and nonoxynol jelly. The contraceptive effectiveness of topical contraceptives is 94%-97%.

3. Intrauterine contraceptive device: It is a safe, easy-to-use, economical and flexible contraceptive method. In our country, about 40% of women of childbearing age use intrauterine devices. Women who are still breastfeeding six months after delivery may consider having an intrauterine device inserted. At present, in addition to metal single ring and copper V-ring, there are also intrauterine devices that can release progesterone and hemostatic drugs. The latter can significantly reduce bleeding and pain while increasing the contraceptive effect. The contraceptive effect of an IUD can last for 5-10 years.

4. Sterilization surgery: It is a permanent sterilization method. It involves a minor surgical procedure to tie the vas deferens or fallopian tubes to block sperm from entering the semen or to prevent the egg from passing through the fallopian tube to meet the sperm. This method has no effect on male sexual function, female menstruation and sexual life; but it is not suitable for lactating women with severe neurosis, sexual diseases or reproductive system inflammation. The failure rate of this method of sterilization is less than 10%.

5. Subcutaneous contraceptive implant: This contraceptive method is to place the contraceptive pill in a sustained-release silicone rod, so that the drug is released slowly and quantitatively in the body and maintained for a long time, about 3-5 years, eliminating the side effects of a one-time large-dose administration, and achieving the purpose of high-efficiency and long-term contraception. The contraceptive pill is a single progestin, which mainly plays an anti-fertilization, anti-implantation, and anti-ovulation role. Because it does not contain estrogen, it will not inhibit milk secretion and affect the baby's growth and development through milk like other estrogen-progestin combination contraceptive pills. Therefore, this contraceptive method is suitable for mothers who need to breastfeed after delivery. Mothers who need to breastfeed can start using it 42 days after delivery. However, this method of contraception also has certain side effects: it may cause menstrual abnormalities (prolonged menstrual period, increased menstrual flow, etc.), obesity, headache and insomnia, etc., and it takes 6-24 months for fertility to recover after discontinuation of use. Moreover, if it is not adapted, it will be troublesome to remove and will cause wounds, so many hospitals do not use this method.
