I have abdominal pain and bleeding half a month after IUD insertion

In order to avoid getting pregnant again after giving birth, many people choose to have an intrauterine device inserted into the uterus. This is a one-time solution and is also the choice of many women. However, not all women have a smooth IUD insertion process. For example, many people experience abdominal pain and bleeding half a month after the insertion. So, is this normal?

1. Is it normal to have abdominal pain and bleeding half a month after having an IUD inserted?

Most people will experience more or less bleeding after having an IUD inserted, which will increase the amount of menstrual blood, as well as spotting and bloody vaginal discharge after menstruation. Most people will gradually get better and return to normal after a period of time. In this case, it is recommended to go to the hospital's obstetrics and gynecology department for examination in time, and then treat the symptoms. If the treatment is ineffective, the contraceptive device should be removed and other methods of contraception should be used instead.

2. The principle of contraception

The mechanism of human pregnancy is that the female ovary releases an egg, the egg is fertilized in the ampulla of the fallopian tube, and then develops into an embryo (morula) in the fallopian tube. The embryo is then released into the uterus to implant and grow. Contraception is about blocking any of these steps.

The contraceptive principle of the intrauterine device (IUD) is: when an embryo wants to implant in the uterus, the constantly moving IUD scrapes the uterine wall, causing aseptic inflammation of the uterus, making it impossible for the embryo to implant and conceive normally in the uterus, thereby causing miscarriage to achieve the purpose of contraception. The essence of the intrauterine contraceptive ring (IUD) is a long-term, mild curettage abortion procedure, and it is the first choice for Chinese women to have contraception after marriage.

3. Adverse reactions of IUD insertion

After the IUD is placed, women may experience mild back pain and soreness. This is because the IUD is not adapted to the new environment and the uterus contracts. It will disappear naturally after a period of time. During this period, be careful not to do heavy work.

After the IUD is inserted, women may experience a small amount of vaginal bleeding, or a shortened menstrual cycle, heavier menstrual flow, or longer menstrual period. This is because the endometrium is compressed by the IUD and the cells undergo inflammatory infiltration. Over time, the symptoms will disappear as the uterus adapts.

After the IUD is placed, women will experience increased vaginal discharge. This is because the uterus is stimulated and cervical secretions increase. Generally, this symptom will gradually decrease after 3 months of IUD placement.

After having an IUD installed, women may experience long-term excessive menstruation. This is because the size of the IUD and the shape of the uterus are not compatible, causing the IUD to compress the endometrium for a long time and lead to bleeding. In this case, the first step is to use drug treatment to reduce bleeding and strengthen uterine contractions. If drug treatment is ineffective, consider surgical removal of the contraceptive ring.

Having an IUD placed does not mean that women can be free from worry once and for all. The IUD may fall off but most women are unaware of it. It is recommended that women undergo regular gynecological examinations after the placement of an IUD to see if the IUD has fallen off or is embedded in the uterus. Generally, an examination is performed once after the menstruation is over in the first month after the IUD is inserted, and again after three months. Thereafter, a examination can be performed every six months to monitor the condition of the IUD in the uterus.
