Will low progesterone lead to miscarriage?

Will low progesterone lead to miscarriage?

Fetal arrest means that the fetus stops developing. Once this happens, spontaneous abortion will follow, which is something that no pregnant woman wants to see. Progesterone is a natural hormone secreted by the ovaries. If threatened miscarriage occurs, the progesterone level will be reduced. Therefore, when the progesterone level is detected to be low, it must be very despairing. So, will low progesterone definitely lead to miscarriage? Let’s take a look below.

Low progesterone levels in women may lead to miscarriage, which is very harmful. If you find that your progesterone level is low, you should first treat it before having a baby.

If you are already pregnant and then find out that your progesterone level is low, you must go to the hospital and have your doctor check whether you need progesterone supplements. Progesterone indicators are often dynamic and will change with the increase of gestational weeks. Therefore, although progesterone is valuable in predicting pregnancy outcomes, it does not mean that progesterone should be injected as soon as progesterone levels are low.

It is also not advisable to blindly preserve the fetus to avoid fetal growth retardation caused by low progesterone. If you use pregnancy-preserving drugs without confirming whether the embryo is in the uterus, if you encounter an ectopic pregnancy, it will put the pregnant woman's life in danger.

During the use of progesterone for pregnancy preservation, pregnant women must also have regular follow-up visits. Once it is discovered that the embryo or fetus has died, the pregnancy must be terminated immediately to avoid stillbirth syndrome that endangers the health or even life of the pregnant woman.

Causes of low progesterone

There are three main reasons for low progesterone:

1. When the corpus luteum is incomplete and the corpus luteum of the ovary is not fully developed, the progesterone content decreases accordingly.

2. Severe disorders of the adrenal glands and thyroid glands can also affect ovarian function, causing ovulation disorders and a corresponding decrease in progesterone levels.

3. The body develops insulin resistance.

Symptoms of Low Progesterone

Progesterone is a sex hormone that delays the shedding of the uterine lining when the egg and sperm combine to form an embryo. Low progesterone levels in the early stages of pregnancy may lead to miscarriage.

1. When pregnant women have low progesterone, infertility is the most obvious symptom.

2. The external symptoms of low progesterone include: hypothyroidism, fibrocystic breasts, gallbladder disease, hypoglycemia, etc., which are not easy to detect, but there will also be symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, vaginal dryness, breast tenderness, etc.

For women who are trying to get pregnant, progesterone can provide a healthy environment for conception, and for young women, progesterone can maintain the regularity of menstruation. In any case, progesterone plays a very important role for women. The symptoms of low progesterone are often easily ignored, so regular endocrine examinations should be performed before or during pregnancy to understand the body's progesterone levels.
