Some women will experience edema during menstruation, which is called menstrual edema. The location of edema is different in different people. The most common is eyelid edema. The upper eyelid looks visibly swollen, and the patient will have a noticeable feeling of heaviness. Some patients with severe conditions look like a silkworm. So what causes this?

1. Reasons

Menstruation is a normal physiological phenomenon for women, but it is sometimes accompanied by various physical discomforts. In addition to the well-known dysmenorrhea and functional uterine bleeding, edema may also occur.

Premenstrual edema occurs because the increase in estrogen levels in the body before menstruation causes sodium and water retention. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is called menstrual edema or edema all over the body during menstruation. It is mostly due to spleen and kidney yang deficiency, poor qi transformation, and poor water and moisture transportation, or due to liver qi stagnation and poor blood circulation.

2. Diagnosis

Premenstrual edema. This type of edema is mostly related to changes in the menstrual cycle and endocrine function, and is a normal physiological phenomenon. Before a woman's menstrual period, edema occurs due to congestion in the pelvic cavity and compression of the lower limbs by the enlarged uterus, which affects blood circulation. In addition, during women's menstrual cycle, the body's water metabolism becomes worse due to the influence of estrogen. When menstruation comes, the amount of urine increases, and edema and other symptoms will gradually subside.

3. Identification

People with facial edema feel a tightness in their face. When the fingers are swollen, the fingers feel swollen, which affects the flexibility of the fingers. The swelling of the feet makes the patient feel that the shoes are tight, and depression may appear when pressing the skin on the dorsum of the foot and ankle. If the abdominal wall and abdominal organs are swollen, there will be a feeling of abdominal distension, weight gain and decreased urine output. When the gastrointestinal tract is swollen, loss of appetite or diarrhea may occur. Pelvic organ edema can cause lower abdominal pain or a feeling of heaviness. This type of edema reaches its peak before menstruation, and the urine volume increases and the edema decreases after menstruation.

4. Prevention in daily life

The way to prevent it is to pay attention to a light diet and reduce salt intake. Diet during your menstrual cycle is important. You can eat some diuretic foods to help the body drain water, such as plantain seeds, mung beans, red beans, winter melon soup, etc. Boil Poria cocos and lotus leaves in a 1:1 ratio into water, add some rock sugar and drink it, which will help eliminate excess water during the menstrual period.

5. Daily conditioning

1. Avoid eating salty food before menstruation. Since salty food will retain water in the body and easily cause edema, you should start eating low-salt food 10 days before your menstrual period.

2. During menstruation, you can eat some diuretic foods to help the body drain water, such as psyllium seeds, mung beans, winter melon soup, etc.

3. No alcohol. Alcohol can aggravate menstrual edema problems. If you must drink, limit it to 1 to 2 cups.

4. Do not use diuretics. Many women think that diuretics can reduce swelling and discomfort during the menstrual cycle, but diuretics will excrete important minerals along with water, which is not good for the body.
