What is the use of chromosome testing for pregnant women?

After a woman becomes pregnant, she should have regular checkups, which will help her keep a close eye on her child's growth and also allow her to know her own health status at the same time. In order to ensure various safety of pregnant women, chromosome examination of pregnant women is an essential item. Chromosome examination is mainly to detect some unhealthy conditions of children as early as possible and take timely measures to prevent risks.

Some pregnant women who are over 35 years old or who are at high risk of fetal defects based on Down syndrome screening may need to undergo an amniocentesis between 16 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. This test requires the doctor to puncture the abdomen with a very fine needle to enter the uterus and extract a small amount of amniotic fluid from the amniotic sac for examination. Cells from the amniotic fluid will be checked for chromosomal problems. This test has a relatively high accuracy rate, but it should be noted that this test can cause miscarriage in a very small number of pregnant women.

Generally speaking, pregnant women who need a chromosome test are advised to do so only after they have experienced fetal growth retardation or habitual miscarriage. See if this is the case for you. If so, it is necessary to check the chromosomes, and both the husband and wife must have their chromosomes checked because checking one person's chromosomes is useless. If you are already pregnant and the doctor asks you to do a chromosome test, it means that you will do amniocentesis or umbilical cord puncture. This is to check whether the baby's chromosomes are normal. This situation usually occurs in older pregnant women and high-risk patients for Down syndrome screening. If you have already done amniocentesis and the baby's chromosomes have problems, then you and your husband's chromosomes must be checked. If one of you has the same chromosome result as the child, then there is no problem (it is genetic). If the adult is normal, the child has a problem.

Chromosome examination for pregnant women is one of the many prenatal examinations and it is also a particularly important one that should not be taken lightly. You should actively cooperate with the doctor during the examination and take appropriate measures in time if any abnormal situation occurs. In addition, in daily life, you must be careful and pay attention at all times so as not to let some small problems harm pregnant women.
