Abdominal pain in mid-pregnancy is a common symptom during pregnancy. It will cause panic and worry in pregnant women. Afraid that something might happen to my fetus. Next, let’s explain what causes stomach pain in mid-pregnancy.

Many pregnant women will suddenly feel persistent dull pain in the lower abdomen without any cause during the second trimester of pregnancy (20 to 24 weeks of pregnancy). A check-up at the hospital showed no symptoms of late threatened abortion, such as uterine contractions and vaginal bleeding. It turns out this is round ligament pain that is common in mid-pregnancy.

After pregnancy, the muscle wall of the uterus thickens and expands with the gradual growth of the fetus, placenta and amniotic fluid. The fundus of the uterus gradually rises and rises into the abdominal cavity. During the 20th to 24th week of pregnancy, the uterus grows fastest, and the round ligament stretches, lengthens, and increases in tension. The uterine wall where the round ligament is attached is pulled, causing pain. In the late pregnancy, the growth rate of the uterus gradually slows down, the stretching range of the round ligament becomes smaller, and the tension decreases. In addition, the body gradually adapts to the traction of the round ligament attachment point, so round ligament pain is only seen in the middle of pregnancy.

So, as a woman in mid-pregnancy, how do you know if your abdominal pain is round ligament pain? This requires understanding the characteristics of round ligament pain: no history of trauma; the pain is persistent dull pain, and does not radiate to the waist or thigh; during examination, the tenderness point is located in the front and lower part of the two corners of the uterus, which is equivalent to the upper 1/3 level between the fundus of the uterus and the pubic symphysis, and is symmetrical on both sides. The tenderness is obvious, more obvious on the left side, with a limited and fixed range, about the size of a nickel coin, and can cause pain at the attachment point of the round ligament on the same side when pressed hard; there are no symptoms of late threatened abortion such as uterine contractions and vaginal bleeding.

Round ligament pain in mid-pregnancy is an acute process and generally does not require special treatment. Pregnant women can rest in bed. If it affects their rest, they can take a small amount of sedatives under the guidance of a doctor. The pain will gradually subside in about a week.
